Music History - Laws that Undermine Creativity
Clip from an interview with Cory Doctorow for my forthcoming documentary on surveillance, privacy and censorship issues called "Orwell Upgraded". For news and progress updates, just sign up for the newsletter on the website, or follow on twitter. orwellupgraded.org http Comments on this video are welcome but any criticism should also address the specific issue in the video itself which is about whether copyright really serves art creativity best. You wouldn #39;t think that copyright had much to do with surveillance, privacy and censorship would you? Nor did I until I started investigating. The copyright regime is now so out of control, that it frequently produces distortions and collateral damage that completely contradict copyright #39;s original stated purpose: To promote the arts. Copyright lobbyists and content cartels, however, will never be satisfied with enough control and are now even demanding that governments implement surveillance, censorship and other drastic measures on their behalf that would seriously affect individual rights and privacy. They are willing to overstep the mark to inflict anything on culture and society if it suits them. The new draconian measures that are being demanded on behalf of copyright would be very difficult to get through a normal democratic process where public and cultural interest must also be taken into account, so instead, they try to sneak them into law through backdoor channels such as secretively negotiated international trade ...From:monkeybrainsmediaukViews:31 1ratingsTime:02:41More inFilm Animation

Google.com Blocked in China
http://www.StockMarketFunding.com "Google.com Blocked in China" Google.com is currently blocked in China, according to watchdog group GreatFire.org. "It #39;s the first time since we started tracking online censorship in China in February last year that this has happened," the group said in a Friday blog post. "The subdomains http://www.google.com, mail.google.com, google-analytics.com, docs.google.com, drive.google.com, maps.google.com, play.google.com and perhaps many more are all currently DNS poisoned in China." Looking at Google #39;s online transparency report, which monitors the accessibility of its services around the world, traffic to Google products has dropped off in China in the last few hours. "We #39;ve checked and there #39;s nothing wrong on our end," a Google spokeswoman said when asked about the blockade. According to GreatFire.org, anyone in China trying to access Google services are redirected to an IP address in Korea that doesn #39;t serve any website at all. "This means that none of these websites, including Google Search, currently work in China, unless you have a VPN or other cirumvention tool," the blog said. At this point, it does not appear that international versions of Google - like Google.co.uk - have been disrupted in China. Google is the second most popular search engine in China behind Baidu and is among the top five most used websites in China on a daily basis, according to Alexa stats. GreatFire.org suggested, however, that the blockade could backfire on Chinese ...From:StockMarketFundingViews:28 4ratingsTime:06:08More inNews Politics
