Library board holding visionary work sessions

Creston Library Board and Mandy Kolesik of Marketing Kinetics have scheduled work sessions for May 19-20.

Kolesik said the sessions will last about three hours each evening whereby the board will dig in and develop a vision for transforming Lincoln School into the citys new library.

We will be focusing on the needs of the Creston community and how we can meet those needs with improvements at Lincoln School, said Ann Coulter, library board president.

In preparation for the sessions, Kolesik said she will provide the board with a list of the top 11 foundations or corporations that may contribute money for the new library at Lincoln School.

The estimated cost for a new library at Lincoln School is $1.8 million. Project details include moving the library from its current location on West Howard Street to the 17,000-square-foot Lincoln School building on West Jefferson Street.

However, the board has only raised $400,000 for the project in four years.

Kolesik said she will also be providing the board with detailed information about what other communities the size of Creston are offering their patrons.

Coulter also reported Creston: Arts Council has shown interest in having space in the lower level of Lincoln School, if the project comes to fruition.

In other Creston Library Board news:

In December, a house was donated to Creston Library Board to be used toward raising funds for a new city library at Lincoln School. The house donated by Edwin and the late Virginia (Stamper) Van Surksum is located in west Omaha.

Filmmaker Fox rallies friends for cycle of short plays at TheatreWorks

Three of the directors of CLAWS (a cycle of shorter plays) at TheatreWorks: Chad White (from left), Eileen Townsend and Morgan Jon Fox. The fourth director is Matt Bowsher.

Morgan Jon Fox has built a reputation as a savvy indie filmmaker and documentarian, but hell tell you that it all got started with the theater.

I had a drama teacher in high school who straightened me out in life, he says. Fox wrote and performed plays until he found filmmaking. He has credits in some two dozen film productions, according to IMDB, including working with Memphis director Craig Brewer.

But Fox loves keeping in touch with his theater side. It continues to pull me back because there really is nothing that rivals the potential power in live bodies on a stage giving it their all, he says. Its at once completely nerve-wracking and explosively exhilarating.

His current project is CLAWS (a cycle of shorter plays), experimental works being presented by Our Own Voice Theatre Troupe at TheatreWorks through May 17.

Fox wrote and is directing two of the plays: Ann Coulter and Dan Savage in an Elevator on Its Way to Hell and Claws. The collaboration includes Eileen Townsend, writer and director of Manhattan Wavepool, Matt Bowsher, who wrote and directs Missed Connections, and recording artist Chad White, who wrote and helmed @Michael&Division.

Fox says the project came about when Bowsher, who is Townsends brother, wanted help in producing a short play hed written about a family dealing with a son coming out as gay. Fox agreed to help and, after getting together with Townsend and talking it over, they decided to package several one-acts in one presentation.

At that time, Our Own Voice was asking for proposals for plays for the next season, Fox says. We wrote it up and they accepted it, and thats how it came about.

Foxs Coulter-Savage piece, which imagines the conservative opinionator in close quarters with the liberal, gay opinionator, is well-described in the title. As for Claws, Fox says it is experimental, featuring people who are broken down by society regurgitating the things they consume daily, from Candy Crush to Words With Friends. Its stream of consciousness, high energy and abrasive.
