RIVERDALE Rev. Al Sharpton visited the Center of Hope Ministry Tuesday to encourage Clayton County residents to get out and vote.

Sharpton was joined by some of Claytons politico including county commission Chairman Jeff Turner, Riverdale Councilman Ancel Davis, College Park Mayor Pro Tem Joe Carn and state Sen. Gail Davenport. It was Sharptons second appearance in Clayton Tuesday, a week ahead of Election Day.

If we dont vote, we dont count, Sharpton told the crowd. People died for our right to vote. Somebody died to give you the right to vote.

He said there should be no excuses not to cast a ballot because of early voting and Sunday voting.

Davenport said the vote is historic and that people all over the nation are looking at Clayton County to make sure MARTA comes to the county.

She echoed Sharptons push to vote.

If youve already voted (early) then take someone out to the polls, said Davenport.

Turner said there is power in the vote and power in the penny.

Educate yourself on the issues and vote for those people who are going to make a difference in your lives, he said.

Sharpton urges support for MARTA vote

Friends of Clayton Transit Coalition Leader Roberta Abdul-Salaam talked about the struggle to bring transit to Clayton County Tuesday. (Staff Photo: Cailin OBrien).

RIVERDALE Rev. Al Sharpton spoke in Clayton County Tuesday to express how important he felt the impending MARTA referendum vote was for both the county and the country.

I didnt want to send a statement to Roberta (Abdul-Salaam, one of the coalition leaders of Friends of Clayton Transit), I wanted to come myself so that people would understand the national significance of this vote, Sharpton said to the crowded room.

A few dozen Clayton County transportation supporters crowded into a room in the Friends of Clayton Transit Education Center in Riverdale to listen to Sharpton speak on the subject as part of a press conference hosted by Friends of Clayton Transit and Henry-Clayton County National Action Network Chapter.

Sharpton is the president and founder of the National Action Network, a civil rights organization meant to work in the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., according to the organizations website.

He urged residents to show up at the polls within the next six days to vote for a referendum that would levy a 1-cent sales tax to bring MARTA to Clayton County.

A portion of that penny would be saved in an account only to be used after officials determine how to bring a high-capacity transit option, such as rail, to the county.

Dissenters worry the proposed MARTA contract may not be the best option for transit in Clayton County and say a 1 percent sales tax increase, which will give Clayton County the highest sales tax in the Southern Crescent, will drive shoppers to surrounding Henry and Fayette counties.

Al Sharpton Hasnt Eaten Dinner in Years

Ever wonder how MSNBCs Al Sharpton has been able to lose so much weight over the last several years? A new profile in the New York Daily News reveals the one major thing he cut from his diet: dinner.

Its not simply that he hasnt had any sweets in years, the Daily News Justin Rocket Silverman writes. He hasnt had dinner in years, either. Sharpton has reportedly gone from a high of 305 pounds all the way down to precisely 129.6, without the use of methods like surgery or diet pills.

I could take all the cartoons in the tabloid newspapers, but I couldnt take my daughter punching me in the belly and asking why I was so fat, Sharpton said.. That was my inspiration to lose the weight. And probably the last time anyone hurt my feelings.

Sharpton reportedly went from eating fried chicken three times a day as early as six years ago, to eating a single salad for lunch all day, every day. I was absolutely content just doing the salad, he said. As a kid who grew up chubby, I just marveled at the fact that I could be thin.

Theres much, much more about the incredible shrinking Sharpton, plus a video of his workout routine, at nydailynews.com.
