Does Al Sharpton Smoke Weed? – Civilized

By Morgan Roger | Jun 20, 2017 | Video

Reverend Al Sharpton Jr. is an American civil rights activist, minister, television and radio talk show host, and a former White House adviser. Sharpton developed his commanding speaking voice at a very young age, as he was a frequent churchgoer, eventually becoming an ordained ministry at just 10 years old. Before learning to read or write, Sharpton preached his first sermon at 4 years old. He then traveled and toured with famed gospel singer Mahalia Jackson to deliver sermons. His successful civil rights career soon followed as he became the Youth Director of New Yorks Operation Breadbasket, Director of Ministers for National Rainbow Push coalition, and founder of his own progressive civil rights organization, the National Action Network (NAN), one of the leading civil rights organizations in the world. Now, Rev. Al Sharpton hosts MSNBCs PoliticsNation and a nationally syndicated radio show.

In 2003, Sharpton ran as a Democratic presidential candidate. During a Rock the Vote debate, moderator Anderson Cooper asked, Which of you are ready to admit to having used marijuana in the past? Rev. Al Sharpton responded, I grew up in a church. We didnt believe in that. Sharpton made it very clear his relationship with marijuana, but now hes taking a different stance, Just because I dont use marijuana as a Minister, does not mean I have the right to impose my moral values on others. Although he doesnt personally consume marijuana, Sharpton is calling for more black representation in the white-dominated weed industry. He will be the keynote speaker at the Cannabis World Congress Business Exposition, marking the first time he will publicly speak about the decriminalization of marijuana and increasing diversity and better inclusion within the marijuana industry. Sharpton will also discuss the disproportionate number of marijuana arrests of black people, who are two to four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana than white people.

Activist Minister Al Sharpton Want More Blacks in the Legal Marijuana Business

Black activist minister Al Sharpton reportedly believes the legal marijuana industry has disproportionately excluded Blacks from business opportunities and is calling for more diversity.

The civil rights preacher, who heads the Harlem-based National Action Network, was the Keynote speaker at the Cannabis World Congress Business Exposition in New York City on Friday.

Just because I dont use marijuana as a minister, does not mean I have the right to impose my moral values on others, the Rev. Sharpton said in a statement.

However, I will challenge the cannabis industry and its distributors in states where it is legal to support civil rights movements and ensure that we are not disproportionately excluded from business opportunities.

Hes expected to denounce the disproportionate number of marijuana arrests of black people, and aims to help identify ways people of color can become more involved in the industry where it operates legally, HuffPost reported.

In March, it was reported that about 36 of the almost 3,600 legal storefront marijuana dispensaries in the country are black-owned or about 1%.

There is on official report on the number of illegal marijuana dealers in the US are Black.

*Rev. Al Sharpton may not personally consume marijuana, but thats not stopping him from calling for more diversity in the white-male dominated cannabis industry.

Sharpton will be the keynote speaker at the Cannabis World Congress Business Exposition in New York on Friday. The event marks the first time he will publicly push for the decriminalization of marijuana use and call for the inclusion of people of color within the industry.

Just because I dont use marijuana as a Minister, does not mean I have the right to impose my moral values on others, Sharpton said in statement sent to HuffPost. However, I will challenge the cannabis industry and its distributors in states where it is legal to support civil rights movements and ensure that we are not disproportionately excluded from business opportunities.

As The Huff Post reports, the event marks the fourth annual year for cannabis expo, which is the leading trade show and conference for the legalized cannabis, medical marijuana and industrial hemp industries. The expo includes a series of speakers and exhibits that highlight ways to open, invest in and grow businesses focused around marijuana.

Sharpton aims to help identify ways people of color can become more involved in the industry where it operates legally, which is expected to surpass $21 billion in 2020.

Decriminalization and diversity are hot buttons for this industry, and there is a low percentage of canna-businesses owned by people of color, said Scott Giannotti, Managing Director, CWCB Expo Events, in an email. To have one of the nations most prominent voices speak on this topic at CWCBExpo is an extreme honor. This is a turning point for the industry and we are proud to have Rev. Sharpton inspire real action forward.

In related news, as early as January 2018, California will become the latest and by far the biggest state to allow the sale of legal adult-use marijuana.
