IBM’s Goldeneye: Behind the scenes at the world’s largest dilution refrigerator – ZDNet

It's fitting that one of the coolest quantum computing projects going has an equally cool name.Goldeneyeis IBM's internal codename for the world's largest dilution refrigerator, which will house a future 1,000,000 qubit quantum processor.

In September 2020, IBM debuted a detailed roadmap about how it will scale its quantum technology in the next three years to reach the true quantum industry inflection point of Quantum Advantage -- the point at which quantum systems will be more powerful than today's conventional computing.

But there's a catch: You can't do anything in quantum without incredibly low temperatures.

To reach this 'moon landing' moment, the IBM team developed the largest dilution refrigerator, which will house a future 1,000,000 qubit system. Work is underway to reach the goal of quantum computer capable of surpassing conventional machines by 2023, and this 10-foot-tall and 6-foot-wide "super-fridge" is a key ingredient, capable of reaching temperatures of 15 millikelvin, which is colder than outer space. The fridge gets so cold it takes between 5 and 14 days to cool down.

I caught up withJerry Chow, Director of Quantum Hardware System Development for IBM, to learn about the Herculean project and to find out what's next for IBM's quantum computing ambitions.

Let's start with the basics: Why is a super-fridge necessary for useful quantum computing and what advances in the last decade or so have aided that effort?

Superconducting qubits need to be cooled down to between 10-15 millikelvin for their quantum behavior to emerge. They need to be kept that cold to ensure that their performance is high. Dilution refrigeration technology, which has been around for a really long time, is an enabling technology specifically for superconducting qubits for quantum computing. Whereas a different type of qubit might require its own unique set of hardware and infrastructure.

Around 2010, cryogen-free dilution refrigerators became en vogue. These didn't require transferring and refilling liquid cryogenic helium every other day to keep these refrigerators cold. In fact, my PhD at Yale was completed entirely at the time when we were still experimenting on what we call "wet" dilution refrigerators. However, around 2010, the whole world started switching over to these reliable cryogen-free "dry" dilution refrigerators which suddenly allowed for experiments with superconducting qubits to be done for a lot longer periods of time with no interruption.

How did the Goldeneye project first took shape? And what were the biggest perceived technical challenges early on?

The very first thought of building something at that scale came from my colleaguePat Gumannwhile brainstorming long-term, 'crazy' ideas in my office in November of 2018. At that time, our team was tasked with deploying our first 53-qubit quantum computer in the IBM Quantum Computation Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, a challenge which pushed a few limits in what we could place into a single cryogenic refrigerator at the time. While working on it, it also really made us start thinking beyond, and almost instantly that we will need much larger cryogenic support system to ever cool down between 1,000 to 1 million qubits. This was simply due to the sheer volume required to host, not only all the qubits, but also all of the auxiliary, cryogenic, microwave electronics cables, filters, attenuators, isolators, amplifiers, etc.

It became very apparent that a new way of thinking in terms of the design would be needed and we started coming up with different form factors for how to effectively construct and cool down a behemoth such as the super-fridge. Some of the challenges we had were purely infrastructural such as how were we going to find a space in the building big enough to start this project and where would we find the capabilities to work with really large pieces of metal.

And as the rubber started to meet the road what have turned out to be the biggest hurdles to creating a useful quantum computer, and what does that say about the trajectory of the technology?

Some of the most challenging hurdles to overcome includes improving the quality of the underlying qubits, which includes improving the underlying coherence times (the amount of time that qubits stay in a superposition state), the achievable two-qubit gate fidelities, and reducing crosstalk between qubits as we scale up.

For that matter, most of these improvements feed into an overall quality measure for the performance of a quantum computer which we have defined called the Quantum Volume. Having a measure such as Quantum Volume allows us to really show progression along a roadmap of improvements, and we have been demonstrating this scaling of Quantum Volume year over year as we make new systems better and better.

The higher the Quantum Volume, the more real-world, complex problems quantum computers can potentially solve. A variety of factors determine Quantum Volume, including the number of qubits, connectivity, and coherence time, plus accounting for gate and measurement errors, device cross talk, and circuit software compiler efficiency.

Where is IBM right now with regards to Goldeneye? What can we expect in the near future?

Our "Goldeneye" super-fridge is very much an ongoing project, which is on target for completion in 2023. It is just one critical part of our long-term roadmap for scaling quantum technology. As we continue to execute on the roadmap we announced in September, we're pleased to share that we achieved aQuantum Volume of 128in November and we're working towards improving the quality of our underlying systems in order to debut our127-qubit IBM Quantum Eagle processorlater this year.

In the near future, we're poised to make exciting developments with our entire technology stack, including software and control systems. At IBM, we're working toward a complete set of broad innovations and breakthroughs.

What will quantum computing mean for the world in the long run? How will be a game changer?

Quantum computing will vastly broaden the types of problems we will address, and the technology offers a new form of computation that we expect to work in a frictionless fashion with today's classical computers. From the chemistry of new materials, and the optimization of everything from vehicle routing to financial portfolios, to improving machine learning, quantum will be an integral part of the future of computing and we're proud to be laying the foundation for a future of discovery.

Caltech and NTT developing the world’s fastest quantum computer – Digital Journal

NTT Research has announced a collaboration with Caltech to develop the worlds fastest Coherent Ising Machine (CIM). This relates to a quantum-oriented computing approach that uses special-purpose processors to solve extremely complex combinatorial optimization problems. CIMs are advanced devices that constitute a promising approach to solving optimization problems by mapping them to ground state searches. The primary application of the computing method is drug discovery. Developing new drugs is of importance, including the current fight against COVID-19. Drug discovery is a commonly cited combinatorial optimization problem. The search for effective drugs involves an enormous number of potential matches between medically appropriate molecules and target proteins that are responsible for a specific disease. Conventional computers are used to replicate chemical interactions in the medical space and other areas of life and chemical sciences. To really move forwards, quantum technology is required to take developments beyond trial and error to rapidly tackle the sheer volume of total possible combinations.Other applications of the technology include:LogisticsOne classic problem is that of the traveling salesman (a common logic problem) identifying the shortest possible route that visits each of n number of cities, while returning to the city of origin. This problem and its variants appear in contemporary form in logistical challenges, such as daily automotive traffic patterns. The advantage of using a quantum information system is speed. Machine LearningA CIM is also a good match for some types of machine learning, including image and speech recognition. Artificial neural networks learn by iteratively processing examples containing known inputs and results. CIMs can speed up the training and improve upon the accuracy of existing neural networks.The development of the new computer system has been pioneered by Kazuhiro Gomi, CEO of NTT Research, and Dr. Yoshihisa Yamamoto, Director of NTT Researchs Physics & Informatics (PHI) Lab, who is overseeing this research. This is a step forwards in CIM optimization problems by uniting perspectives from statistics, computer science, statistical physics and quantum optics.

Hive Social Is a New Social Media App That Apparently Blew up Over Night – Distractify

The Hive Social app is apparently the newest, trendiest social media platform for Gen Z. Based on Hive's Twitter account, it aims to be similar to Instagram, but without the annoying ads and finicky algorithm. And a lot of people who are sick of Facebook and Twitter's social networking monopoly are excited to join. But what exactly is Hive Social? We did a deeper dive.

Although the app isn't new (it was seemingly created or at least marketed in 2019), people have flocked to Twitter today to find out more about this new-ish social media app, some making memes that sum up our collective attitude about yet another new social media app we have to figure out.

Hive Social aims to be a BS-free social networking platform. Design and experience-wise, it's similar to Instagram. It has a grid and a "feed" where you can follow other users and also follow content based on your interests, like beauty, fashion, gaming, etc. You can also pick songs for your profile (the first one is free, the others cost $.99 a pop). And if you downloaded Hive and are having trouble using it, you're not alone. Apparently due to all the new users, their servers went down.

That's right: According to Hive's Twitter account, they gained over 130,000 followers over night. As of right now, it's unclear what caused this surge in users.

According to Life&Style, Hive was created and is run by a woman named Kassandra (@honeyxmua on Twitter). HIVE is really a place where everyone is welcome, so we want to attract everyone from all communities the everyday person to bloggers for travel, food, beauty, cars, etc., to small businesses and big brands. Whatever your interests are if they fall within our Community Guidelines designed to keep HIVE safe and respectful youll have a space with us, Kassandra shared.

She elaborated more about the app, saying, HIVE is oriented [around] the user experience through a chronological order feed that maximizes content engagement...the ability to select multiple songs for a more personalized profile that will play when users visit your page, liking, commenting and reposting content.

According to a feature on Hive on Her Paper Route, Hive seems to be trying to democratize the social media experience, making it so anyone can monetize off of their account, and they'll be given much more freedom to do so. "With the Hive app you can literally monetize your account the moment you sign up. This is the biggest news in the world of affiliate and influencer marketing right now." You're allowed to post links in your caption and comment with URLs you want to promote.

This is why, allegedly, a lot of influencers are really interested in Hive (we've yet to find any influencers using the app, but we'll update this article once we do). On Instagram you need to have at least 10,000 followers to feature a swipe-up in your Instagram Story, and the only way to promote a link is to put it in your bio. Hive seems to solve that problem.

Currently, it seems like Hive is a one-woman team (or at least, a very small team). According to Hive's Twitter feed, the CEO (Kassandra) runs the account.

According to Kassandra herself, she's planning on adding live streaming as a feature pretty soon. And Android users, you will soon be able to download the app (right now it's only available for Apple users).

Hive Social Media App: Twitter’s Trendiest App is Run by One Woman? [More Fun Facts] – Tech Times

The newest social media application, Hive Social became the loudest discussion on Twitter, after several followers joined the crowd in knowing and hearing what it offers to the users, especially to Gen Z.

While the Hive reported that their application is like Instagram, an app bought for $1 billion by Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg, it offers a smoother scrolling thanks to the absence of the 'irritating' ads. The hype is already set for the Twitter and Facebook users to try the most trending app so far.

According to Distractify,Hive Social could be the next Instagram, plus an upgraded interface design. In addition, the said app also lets you scroll over interesting topics that are in line with your taste like gaming and fashion, through its "feed" and grid.

What's fascinating about Hive Social is you can select songs of your choice for your Hive profile. Although the first songs are free, the rest will cost $9.99 a pop.

Since it escalated to the trending apps on Twitter, logging in the Hive Social generated some troubles because there is an influx of new users who downloaded and tried the app. As a result, the servers were experiencing 'down' moments.

Hive Social, in fact, was not a brand-new social networking app. It was launched in October 2019, which at the time was undergoing some developments for the users to fully enjoy their app-experience.

On February 2, 130,000 users rushed on Twitter to hear some news about the Hive Social app. It is clearly evident that the invasion of the users made Hive alive at that time. Some already created 'meme-worthy' posts about the social media that everyone is curious about.

As mentioned a while ago, it was similar to IG, yet the interest to test the app among the influencers was high. On Instagram, a user will need to gather at least 10,000 followers before unlocking the 'Swipe-Up' feature in your IG Story. It will only be possible by posting the link in your bio as a promotion.

In Hive Social, there is no need for you to reach 10,000 followers before enjoying the said feature. Additional updates will be included in the future announcements of the app.

A female user named Kassandra, who is also known as Honey on Twitter, was the mastermind behind the creation of the Hive. She shared that the Hive Social welcomes all people from various communities regardless if they are regular persons or influencers like bloggers who have the appetite for different interests like travel, cars, business, food, and other forms of fascination.

Moreover, Kassandra mentioned that the app helps the users pick their preferred content so that they can engage with the different topics in chronological order in their feed, plus the new feature to pick songs of their choice for their profile.

Furthermore, users will feel more freedom in navigating the Hive. Every one can monetize their accounts upon signing up. Kassandra told that it was the biggest news especially for affiliate marketers who will now rely on captioning and posting anything that they love to promote to the public,Her Paper Routeposted.

Since Hive Social is only limited to Apple users, Kassana said that she is soon releasing a 'live stream' feature soon. The availability of the social media app to Android users is also part of her plan.

Meet Clubhouse, the voice-only social media app setting the internet abuzz – The Conversation AU

Theres a new kid on the social media block, and it is making big waves. It is less than a year old, yet is already valued at US$1 billion, and has venture capitalists scrambling to invest.

The newcomer is Clubhouse, a social platform built around drop-in audio chat. Featuring ephemeral real-time voice conversations that any user can listen to and nobody can record, the invite-only app has gathered a legion of high-profile fans and some two million users.

The coronavirus pandemic may have created the ideal conditions for Clubhouse to thrive: hordes of people isolated by lockdowns or safety concerns, desperate for social connection. Text-based social media is fine as far as it goes, but voice is a natural alternative.

After a recent injection of cash, Clubhouse is planning to expand. Heres what all the fuss is about.

Users can follow other users or topics of interest, as well as joining themed clubs. They then have access to a selection of chat rooms focusing on different topics, many of which are highly tuned to the zeitgeist.

Rooms come in all sizes. Some have just a few people chatting informally. Others might contain hundreds or even thousands of people listening to a panel of experts, perhaps a politician, a celebrity or a business leader.

The others in the room are visible and you can bring up their profiles, complete with a list of whom they follow. The Clubhouse algorithm takes all this into account when offering content choices.

If you want to say something, raise your hand, and the room owner can give you speaking privileges. You can even applaud a speaker by rapidly clicking the mute/unmute button.

All of this happens in audio-only. At its best, its like eavesdropping on a fascinating conversation with the ability to join in if you have something to add.

Many early users raved about how much they like it. One reason Clubhouse is proving so popular is that audio can feel much more intimate and live than text-based social media. People often prefer to talk and listen rather than use a keyboard.

In its short life, Clubhouse has garnered an enviable social cachet. At present, the only way to access the app is to be invited by an existing user.

From initial popularity among Silicon Valley investors, Clubhouse has attracted an impressive number of public figures, including Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk and Drake. Youll also find experts with deep domain knowledge, politicians with policies to champion, and celebrities talking about their latest projects.

Well-known users like these have been a major drawcard, and the relative scarcity of invitations have added to a sense of exclusivity.

Rooms in Clubhouse are temporary. When the meeting is over, the room disappears, and any discussion is gone forever. And it is not possible to record the discussion.

The temporary nature of the rooms may help to stop the formation of social media echo chambers where people are only exposed to those with whom they already agree.

With membership by invitation only, for now at least, there are two ways you can join. The first is by personal invitation from a friend who is already a member.

Otherwise, you can download the app and reserve a username to get yourself on the waiting list. If you do this, anyone you know who is already a member might be notified and if that happens, they might let you in.

Clubhouse is currently only available on Apple devices. The firm has stated its intention to release an Android version in the near future.

The social media newcomer recently secured a new round of funding in the order of US$100 million. Plans for the future include opening up to the general public and allowing content creators to be paid.

The firm is considering three types of income generation: tipping, ticket sales and subscriptions. How all of this will come together is yet to be decided. Their current user base of around 2 million will likely see exponential growth. (For comparison, Facebook is approaching 3 billion users and even Twitter boasts more than 300 million.)

The history of innovation is marked by people making serendipitous connections. Meeting the right person at the right time in an unplanned way. Such connections cannot be made on demand, but you can create the right conditions for them to happen spontaneously.

The apps rules try to make sure conversations are effectively off the record:

This encourages spontaneity and relaxed, off-the-cuff chats but critics say it also makes space for misogyny and racism. As the Clubhouse network grows, it will face challenges around transparency and content moderation like those confronting the likes of Facebook and YouTube.

Voice-based networks such as Clubhouse and Twitters new Spaces feature are well suited to creating the right conditions for those serendipitous connections to be made for better or worse.
