V-GLUG: Leading free software movement from rural Villupuram – The New Indian Express

Express News Service

VILLUPURAM: Thepandemic did not stop this group of techies from the rural Villupuram to work towards software freedom, as the V-GLUG team began its weekly meeting to discuss about open software movement recently.

U Karkee, one of the founders of V-GLUG said, Our weekly meetings will address the technical, political and marketing aspects of software freedom. The participants who mainly come from rural areas seldom have access to these ideologies.

We are aiming to educate rural youth on technical knowledge to compete in the contemporary digital era.D Haripriya, a software engineer told Express, The awareness on using open-source software hasnt reached people of Tamil Nadu but in many countries in Europe, China, and Ghana the freedom of using them are celebrated.

Dissenting against the domination of corporate companies in software industry is essentially our aim. We need to move towards a more free, liberated form of internet access. So, in our mission to take this message across techies and students in the district, we started our weekly meeting. The first meeting on Sunday was attended by about 35 students from villages. The Villupuram GLUG (V-GLUG) is a team of techies who promote free usage of software in computers and smartphones, as a part of the global movement aimed against corporate giants that charge for their software.

These kinds of open-source software are transparent to users as the codes used to develop these software are open and accessible, which prevents illegal changing or hacking of codes unlike the licensed ones. K Satish Kumar, another software engineer in V-GLUG, spoke about the politics of free software. Satish said, The codes of the software sold by corporate giants are not transparent, so we cant recode them with anti-viral codings. Hence, our money spent for it goes in vain and our system is at risk of bugs. Isnt this essentially a daylight robbery? The voice against these companies will grow in future, as the internet is being accessed by 20 per cent of the total population in our country.

The Untold Technological Revolution Sweeping Through Rural China – The New York Times

Wang hangs out with a 25-year-old man named Sun Wei, who despite having only a high school degree has built a career flying drones to do aerial reconnaissance for Chinas small farmers. Wei radiates a bonhomie that reminds one of Americas postwar boom: Its a feeling that you have a right to the future, a right to imagination beyond the immediacy of the day, as Wang puts it. The technological boom produces genuine moments of rural prosperity, when it works.

Though sometimes it doesnt, quite. As a former software engineer in San Francisco, Wang has a grim appreciation for the dark side effects that technology can bring the breaking things suffix to the diktat of moving fast.

Consider the boom in the production of pork, a hot commodity among Chinas increasingly prosperous diners. To increase the yield of pork farms, Alibaba trained a new artificial intelligence, ET Agricultural Brain, on vast amounts of data from pork operations, the better to predict how to increase yield. (They set up entire digital towns where young rural workers sit all day long clicking on pictures of pigs, labeling them as sick or healthy, to feed the A.I.s smarts.) In the short run, the A.I. does indeed help optimize soaring pork production. Its a win for diners, for pork producers and for government, which yearns for China to achieve food security. (The food bowl of the Chinese people must always remain firmly in their own hands, as Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, has said.)

But nature does not always respond so obediently. One key strategy that emerges from all this high-efficiency pork farming? Feeding the animals industrial pig swill, a goulash that, cannibalistically, includes ground-up pig parts. And this, in turn, creates dangerous new vectors for disease, spreading the dreaded African swine fever so badly that by 2019 it tore through China and destroyed nearly one-quarter of the worlds pigs.

Certainly, technology is good at scaling making things grow big, run more efficiently, move more speedily. With its hundreds of millions of rural poor clamoring to join the middle class, China craves scale. (The West doesnt understand our problems. We just have too many people, Wang is told.) But efficiency can cause problems of its own, leaving China caught in a dilemma: the need for scale, the peril scale brings.

Wang also finds that, for rural China, tech-propelled business models can produce the grim dynamics of the gig economy, where a far-off tech giant runs your life. The blockchain chicken software? Its nifty, but the farmer neither understands the technology nor owns it; its provided by a tech firm that in the first year of their collaboration ordered 6,000 chickens in advance to sell off to an online supermarket, and in the second year, nothing. Meanwhile, those Taobao villages also contain some embittered merchants who hate the e-commerce platform, because it allows buyers to demand refunds long after theyve received their goods. One shoemaker has lost so much money this way that hes forced to make lower- and lower-quality shoes to keep his profits up. Its all a scam, he says.

Wang has written a nuanced and thought-provoking account, and it is not easy to tell, after youre done reading it, how rural China will fare whether its tiptoe toward prosperity and tech savviness is durable. Given that Chinas economic fate is now so entwined with the world, one hopes it can thread the needle. Visiting the Cloud Computing Museum of Alibaba, Wang sees the firms first homegrown server from years ago, adorned with a poem:

codeline by linebuilds the foundationfor eternity just like sand grain by grain calms the roaring sea.

Global Embedded Software and Tools Market to 2027 – Growing Usage of in Wearable Technology & Electronic Design Automation (EDA) – GlobeNewswire

Dublin, Oct. 14, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Embedded Software and Tools - Global Market Outlook (2019-2027)" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

Global Embedded Software and Tools Market is growing at a CAGR of 7.4% during 2019 to 2027

Growing usage of embedded software and tools in wearable technology, electronic design automation (EDA), and increasing adoption of multi-core technology in embedded software are the major factors propelling the market growth. However, privacy & data security issues, increasing costs are hampering the market growth.

Embedded software and tools are computer software, which is written to control machines or devices that are not typically thought of as computers. They are typically specialized for particular hardware that runs and has time & memory constraints. Embedded software is written on computer chips and integrated into hardware systems. Once embedded and implemented into hardware, the software cannot be altered by users. This software is usually developed for special hardware that uses real time OS such as Lynx OS, Windows CE, Fusion RTOS, and Others.

Based on the tool, the real-time operating system (RTOS) segment is going to have a lucrative growth during the forecast period due to the increase in the adoption of RTOSs in vehicles. The RTOS helps vehicle manufacturers to address safety issues associated with autonomous driving.

By geography, Asia-Pacific is going to have a lucrative growth during the forecast period due to the presence of nations such as China, India and Japan, where the nations are focused on the development of advanced ICT goods, coupled with the presence of a significant ICT infrastructure in the nations.

Moreover, an RTOS provides the rigorous resource management and scheduling required to meet the demands of applications- with multitasking, threads, priority-driven preemptive scheduling, and fast context-switching.
