Pelosi confuses Article II with Second Amendment in criticism of Trump – Washington Examiner

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi intended to fling one of her routine barbs at President Trump over remarks he made referencing Article II of the Constitution but stumbled and called it the Second Amendment instead.

When asked if she would support House committee chairmen sending subpoenas for former White House national security adviser John Bolton to testify, the California Democrat replied that Trump should be held to oversight.

Our purpose in all of this, in addition to holding him accountable, so he stops doing what hes doing and no future president thinks she or he could have liberty to take us away from a republic if you can keep it to a Second Amendment enables me to do whatever I want no. Thats not what our Constitution is about," Pelosi said at her weekly press conference on Thursday after suggesting that Trump was drugged up.

Article II of the Constitution establishes the powers and defines the executive branch of the federal government, among other issues, while the Second Amendment establishes an individuals right to bear arms.

For months, Pelosi has repeatedly criticized Trump for his comments about Article II of the Constitution. For instance, on Nov. 13 she said: As custodians of the Constitution, we are defenders of our democracy. So, Im very prayerful, thoughtful, and actually sad today that our country has to come to a place where the president doesnt understand that Article II does not say that he can do whatever he wants, that he is not above the law, and that he will be held accountable.

Pelosi said it again on Dec. 5, when she announced the lower chamber was ready to move forward with articles of impeachment against Trump.

"The presidents actions have seriously violated the Constitution, especially when he says and acts upon the belief 'Article II says I can do whatever I want.' No. His wrongdoing strikes at the very heart of our Constitution," she said.

Trump referred to Article II of the Constitution when he was giving a speech to a crowd of young adults at the Turning Point USA Teen Student Action Summit in Washington on July 23, 2019. At the time, Trump was criticizing special counsel Robert Muellers Russia investigation.

Then, I have an Article II, where I have to the right to do whatever I want as president, Trump said. But I dont even talk about that because, they did a report and there was no obstruction and after looking at it our great attorney general read it. Hes a total professional. He said, Theres nothing here. Theres no obstruction.'"

Second Amendment sanctuary is a bad idea | Letters To Editor – Herald Palladium

As the Berrien County Board of Commissioners considers declaring our county a Second Amendment sanctuary, I hope that they take the entire United States Constitution into consideration, and value its entire protection. In doing so, I am certain that they will see that the Constitution itself stands in the way of taking up this well intentioned, but still misguided pursuit.

WATCH: Parkland Dad Booted From SOTU After Heckling Trump, Second Amendment – The Daily Wire

Anti-gun rights activist and the father of a Parkland school shooting victim, Fred Guttenberg, was asked to leave President Donald Trumps annual State of the Union (SOTU) address on Tuesday night after the activist heckled the president for vowing to protect Americans Second Amendment rights.

Mr. Guttenberg shouted about gun control when Trump vowed that he would always protect your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

The father attended the SOTU address as a guest of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

According to the New York Post, the speaker turned to the gallery with a stern look after the disruption and muttered something under her breath after Guttenbergs outburst.

The father, who tragically lost his 14-year-old daughter Jaime during the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, is a constant activist against gun rights.

In September, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) met with both actress/left-wing activistAlyssa Milano and Guttenberg to discuss the Second Amendment.

I am always grateful for the opportunity to engage in positive, civil discussion on the substantive issues of the day especially with those with whom I disagree. Todays meeting was productive and respectful, and I appreciate Alyssa and Freds willingness to come here with an open mind. I believe more conversations like this will go a long way in helping unite and heal our divided country, Sen. Cruz said in a statementfollowing the meeting.

We all agree we have far too many of these mass shootings, and they need to stop. It is long past time for everyone to put away the partisan talking points so we can work together to solve this problem. We need to act, he added.

Though Pelosi was seemingly displeased with Guttenbergsoutburst, the speaker offered some disobedience herself on Tuesday night. The leading Democrat refused to properly announce President Trump at the start of the evening, andripped up her copy of Trumps speech following the event.

As reported by The Daily Wire, decades of past SOTU addresses showthat is protocol for the House Speaker to announce the president by noting that it is their high privilege and distinct honor to do so:Members of Congress, I have the high privilege and distinct honor of presenting to you the President of the United States.

Instead, Pelosi merely announcedTrump as follows: Members of Congress, the President of the United States.

Pelosi was unapologetic about ripping up Trumps speech, too.

In a statement reported by The Washington Poston Tuesday, the speaker called the speech from the president a manifesto of mistruths.

The manifesto of mistruths presented in page after page of the address tonight should be a call to action for everyone who expects truth from the President and policies worthy of his office and the American people, a statement from Pelosi said.

Nancy Pelosi says ripping up Donald Trumps speech was was the courteous thing to do considering the alternative,'Jim Roberts reported.

Eight House Democrats (listed below) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) all skipped the presidents speech:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)

Rep. AyannaPressley (D-MA)

Rep. Al Green (D-TX)

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN)

Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR)

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA)

Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL)

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA)

Gun rights center stage again at Atlantic County freeholders: Freeholders are weighing all of their options before determining whether they should approve a resolution to make Atlantic County a Second Amendment sanctuary.

Bridgeton officials continue search for missing 5-year-old: The case remains front and center, police Chief Michael Gaimari Sr. said in a Facebook post, amid negative social media posts and news regarding tips from psychics.

West Wildwood residents get answers on $1.75M sewer bond ordinance: Mayor Christopher Fox said the project would replace sanitary sewers on P Street from Arion to G Street, and on G from Poplar to Glenwood, a total of about seven blocks.

West Wildwood Mayor Christopher Fox, shown here in a November 2019 meeting, was not at the January meeting in which a bond ordinance passed to fund a sewer project. A taxpayer group is trying to reverse the bond ordinance, saying the two commissioners in attendance could not answer basic questions about the project to be funded.

What the story of Jesus’ temptation says about the Christian culture wars | What the story of Jesus’ temptation says about the Christian culture wars…

Im not much involved in the culture war because I think its a misuse of time and energy, especially on the part of Christians and churches, to be vying for political power.

The Evangelical Right was the first to fall to this temptation in recent American history, but the Progressive Left is quickly following suit. Its like well do and say almost anything to bolster our advantage against the other side.

Hear me out on this matter, please. Its not that I think certain issues arent important when it comes to our culture, and its not that I think we shouldnt stand for what is right, especially when it comes to our solidarity with the most vulnerable members of society. The church has a prophetic calling to speak truth to power in every sphere of life.

Its the way we go about it that matters.

Youre probably familiar with the story of Jesus going to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (Luke 4:1-14). The good book says that after he fasted and prayed for forty days, Satan came to offer him some help.

Use your power to feed yourself, he suggested (Im paraphrasing here). Throw yourself down from the pinnacle of the temple. Just show me a little obeisance and all the kingdoms of the world will be yours. Easy peasy.

Of course, Jesus refused his offer on every count and subsequently returned to town in the power of the Spirit. I think we tend to overlook the significance of this exchange, especially that last little bit. Jesus returned with power, but it wasnt the kind of power the devil offered him. It wasnt worldly power Christ sought but spiritual power, the difference between power over and power with.

Essentially, this story symbolizes the human temptation to take power over our fellow creatures in effect, bypassing the suffering of the cross to gain what might otherwise seem to be legitimate ends.Jesus denied himself this temptation and chose a better way. Christians are called to imitate Christ in this way, but the culture war demonstrates our overwhelming failure to do so.

Forgive me if Im wrong here and Im well aware of how much my privilege may be playing into my viewpoint but I think both the Evangelical Right and the Progressive Left in America have fallen for the devils temptation. In a well-intended but misguided effort to advance their righteous cause(s), they have left the way of Christ to jockey for political power instead.

Without going deeply into it, I should also point out that political power is always power over. It is the power of the State which is maintained by either the threat or force of violence. Granted, the violence of the American state (at least upon its own citizens) may seem benign compared to other authoritarian countries, but it is no less real. If you dont believe me, just stop paying your taxes for a while. Youll find out how free you really are.

Until the time of Constantine, there seems to have been a fairly unanimous if not universal view among Christians that taking the way of Christ meant refusing participation in the ways of the world, which amounted to not being a direct participant in the affairs of the State. In the words of Eberhard Arnold,

The [early] Christians abhorred and attacked [any] mixture of the religious and the patriotic. They detested any State religion that forced back Gods rule; they loathed all religiosity influenced by the politics of the moment, and fought against any veneration of the existing power structure. This included any political system with a religious emphasis. These were to be regarded as the inheritance of Babylon, the works of sin and demonism. They were nothing short of the devils state and the service of Satan. (The Early Christians in Their Own Words)

Theoretically, this conviction would have held true whether or not the state was considered Christian, as it often is in modern-day America. In fact, most early disciples would have scoffed at the notion of a Christian nation, because, again every nation is founded on either the threat or force of violence, and this type of power (power-over) is essentially anti-Christ. It is the way of the world.

I realize that Im hinting at some pretty big implications here, but I dont see how the Christian faith proposes anything less.At the very least, it suggests that no matter which side wins the Christian culture war, weve already lost the battle for a new world just by participating in it.

Ill stop there. The prophets and patriarchs of old dreamed of a celestial city not built with human hands, whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11:10). Part of what I think this means is that the new Earth, including its people and its social systems, will not be built on the foundation of human violence as our current systems are. We need a better way for a new humanity. The way of Christ.
