An official portrait of former first lady Michelle Obama was unveiled at the Smithsonians National Portrait Gallery Monday morning.

The painting was done byBaltimore artist Amy Sherald, who is known for her social justice painting style.

Lets just start by saying, Wow, again. Let me just take a minute. Its amazing. Wow, Obama said after the portrait was unveiled. The moment was met with a gasp and applause.

All presidents and first ladies have their portraits done and hung in the Portrait Gallery.

Whatcha think? she asked her mother, Marian Robinson. Its pretty nice, isnt it?

Obama said that she and President Barack Obama interviewed several artists for their portraits, and that she bonded with Sherald because of all the time they spent together.

The comments on twitter were equally disapproving:

Ouch.

Liberals livid after deal to end shutdown – POLITICO

Activist groups were angry at how the negotiations turned out, with some calling it '#SchumerSellout.'

Liberal activists are furious with Democratic senators after most of them agreed to reopen the federal government without a firm path to shielding young immigrants from deportation.

As the third day of the shutdown dawned, liberal advocates and immigration groups fired off a joint statement blasting as unacceptable Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnells offer merely to hold a vote on immigration with no promises for action from the House or White House in exchange for Democratic votes to reopen the government. But three hours later, Democratic senators agreed to just those terms sparking anger on the left.

Story Continued Below

Millions of people flooded the streets of every major American city to stand up to Trump this weekend, tweeted Leah Greenberg, co-executive director of the influential activist network Indivisible. Your constituents want you to fight. How can you possibly not understand that?

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday argued Democrats secured critical assurance for Dreamers, who are at risk for deportation as soon as March after President Donald Trumps decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

We have a way to address the fate of the Dreamers, starting right now instead of waiting until March, Schumer said on the floor.

But activist groups that have provided his caucus crucial firepower during fights against GOP health care and tax bills were not buying that explanation.

Murshed Zaheed, political director of the liberal group CREDO Action, said Democrats decision shows Schumers willingness to betray progressives.

Call it the #SchumerSellout, he said in an interview. Hashtagged.

Ben Wikler, Washington director of MoveOn.org, slammed McConnells offer to Democrats and lamented the minoritys splintering over protecting Dreamers.

Whats clear from todays joke deal is that the grass-roots movement demanding unity and courage has a lot of work to do to ensure that the whole Democratic Caucus is ready to fight when the time comes, he said in an interview.

United We Dream Executive Director Cristina Jimnez, whose group has mobilized its grass roots to push for Dreamer protection, tweeted that Dems failed to fight & use their leverage to protect immigrant youth. A false promise to vote on immigration from Rs is not a strategy to win. We wont be fooled. This vote means deportation.

Not every group on the left lambasted Senate Democrats on Monday.

Organizing for Action, an offshoot of the political organizing arm built by former President Barack Obama, attempted to keep the blame for the three-day shutdown on the GOP, even as it offered faint praise for the Senate agreement.

The good news for the American people is that the government shutdown a crisis needlessly manufactured by Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and the White House will soon be over, OFA spokesman Jesse Lehrich said in a statement. But lets be clear: This stopgap measure is not a solution. Its merely a band-aid for a self-inflicted wound that remains untreated.

Schumer spokesman Matt House urged all supporters of Dreamer aid to come together around securing the strongest possible showing for an immigration deal next month, when McConnell has vowed to move to a debate on the issue.

Lets take advantage of the renewed attention and sympathy for Dreamers, and focus on winning the vote 17 days from now, House wrote in an email.

House Democratic leaders are expected to vote against the Senates three-week government funding patch, which cleared a key procedural hurdle on an 81-18 vote. That opposition may ensure that the ire of activists remains trained on the upper chamber, where only 16 Democrats voted against advancing the stopgap bill.

Erdogan threatens US with ‘Ottoman slap,’ says all NATO …

Washington could soon receive the "Ottoman slap," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned, while also stating that all members of NATO are equal with the US.

While speaking to the ruling Justice and Development (AK) party in Ankara on Tuesday, Erdogan referenced a recent remark by Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk, the top US commander in the US-led coalition against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), who said that Turkey would face a sharp response if it struck Manbij, Syria.

Those who say they will give a sharp response if hit, have clearly never got the Ottoman slap in their lives, Erdogan said, referring to a half-legendary Turkish martial move that involves a potent open-palm hit, resulting in a one-hit knockout or even skull fractures and death.

Erdogan also addressed the NATO alliance, of which both Turkey and the US are members. "What kind of NATO membership is this? What kind of NATO alliance is this?" he asked. "As president of Turkey, [I say] NATO is not equal to the US, all countries [in the alliance] are equals to the US."

His remarks come at a time of increasingly strained relations between the US and Turkey. On Monday, Ankara sought clarity from the US while threatening to break ties. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusogli told journalists that his country sought "concrete steps" from Washington, adding that US actions are the reason for "missing trust" between the two NATO allies.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday that Turkey had briefed the alliance about its operations in Syria's Afrin last week. He went on to express hope that such briefings would continue.

"Turkey has briefed NATO on the operation Olive Branch, they did so last week, and I have been in regular contact with the Turkish leadership, including with president Erdogan regarding the situation in Syria and the operation Olive Branch. I expect Turkey to continue to brief allies," Stoltenberg said.

The NATO secretary-general also acknowledged Turkey's "legitimate security concerns," and its right to address those concerns. "But they should do that in a proportionate and measured way," he said.

Turkeys officials, however, do not seem to be satisfied with the ambiguous statements from their NATO allies anymore. On Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has harshly responded to a similar statement on understanding Ankaras legitimate security concerns produced by the US Defence Secretary James Mattis.

Our demands from the US are clear and have already been conveyed. We no longer want to hear about promises; we want to hear about concrete steps. Trust needs to be rebuilt so we can start to talk about some issues, Cavusoglu said on Monday.

Alliance for Securing Democracy | The German Marshall Fund …

Our Mission

Finding out what happened in the United States in 2016 and the impact it had is important. But that is not enough. The U.S. intelligence community assessed in January 2017 that Moscow will apply lessons learned from its Putin-ordered campaign aimed at the U.S. presidential election to future influence efforts worldwide, including against U.S. allies and their election processes. Russias efforts are also ongoing across Europe and we also need to prepare for other state actors to replicate Putins tactics. Moreover, Putin does not distinguish between political parties, but rather seeks to sow and exploit divisions. When our democratic institutions are weakened, every party and democratic nation is at risk.

Meeting this challenge to our democracy demands that Republicans and Democrats in the United States unite with our democratic allies around the world to better understand Russias multifaceted aggression in order to defend ourselves and our democratic partners, and deter such activity in the future.

The Alliance for Securing Democracy, a bipartisan, transatlantic initiative housed at The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), will develop comprehensive strategies to defend against, deter, and raise the costs on Russian and other state actors efforts to undermine democracy and democratic institutions. The Alliance will work to publicly document and expose Vladimir Putins ongoing efforts to subvert democracy in the United States and Europe.
