Trudeau Cracks Down on Illegal Immigration – National Review

After reminding the world that Canada is a country of laws, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the nation will no longer be ignoring refugees who enter the country illegally. Faced with a rash of border crossings from the U.S. and growing criticism of his quixotic approach to border control, Trudeaus decision marks a major turning-point from his campaign.

Evidently, Trudeau is recognizing what any head of state who campaigns for radically loose immigration policies must at some point: Opening borders poses serious problems, both practical and political. Angela Merkel is facing pressure to accept an upper limit of refugees in Germany, and many see Britains exit from the European Union as a rebellion against the EUs more liberal refugee policy.

Canadas refugee problem has grown exponentially in the past few months. In all of 2015, only 2,900 crossed over the U.S. border into Quebec illegally. Since July 1 of this year, that number has reached 6,800. Over half of those account for the first two weeks of August alone. A large number of these have fled the U.S. in fear of Donald Trumps aggressive stance on illegal immigration and his proposal to make legal immigration a more exclusive process. Trudeau has not been vague on social media in his criticism of Trumps border control policies, tweeting in January that Canada welcomes all, because diversity is our strength.

Enforcement is enforcement, however, and no progressive message of inclusion could save Trudeau from having to uphold his countrys laws. He informed the refugees on Sunday that they would be expected to go through the countrys rigorous screening process, reminding them that illegal crossing doesnt allow them to circumvent existing laws.

This shouldnt surprise. Canadas process is one of the most rigorous in the world. Refugees aside, those who wish to immigrate to Canada must contend with a merit-based system similar to the one Trump proposed earlier this month. Skilled labor, points for French- and English-language proficiency, and high levels of education are all pre-requisites. As Trudeau is discovering, tone does not an immigration policy make.

Immigration crackdown has been effective, DHS officials say ahead of Trump’s Arizona visit – CNBC

Donald Trump speaks during a press conference with President of Mexico Enrique Pena Nieto (not seen) at Los Pinos presidential residence, in Mexico City, Mexico on August 31, 2016.

The crackdown on suspected illegal immigrants is working, senior officials said Tuesday ahead of President Donald Trump's visit to Yuma, Arizona.

Arrests of suspected illegal immigrants are up 43 percent in the first half of 2017 from the same period last year, Department of Homeland Security officials said. The DHS branch Immigration and Customs Enforcement made 91,000 arrests during the first seven months of the year, they said.

"Going from 5 miles of fence to 60 miles of fence on the Yuma border made a huge difference," a senior DHS official said in a conference call with media, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Increased enforcement, including this year's extension of the fence, resulted in an 83 percent drop in illegal border crossings near Yuma since 2007, the official said. Up to 800 immigrants illegally crossed the border in the area every day in 2005 and 2006, the official said.

The DHS officials said 126,472 apprehensions have been made in the first half of this year, a 46 percent increase from the first half of 2016.

Away from the border, removals in the interior of the country are up 32 percent this year from last year, the officials said.

"There are 500,000 immigration fugitives and criminal aliens that ICE cannot reach or arrest" due to available resources and sanctuary city protections, another senior DHS official said on the call.

As a candidate, Trump pledged to crack down on illegal immigration and build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to deter people from coming into the country. The wall expansion has proven slow, and Mexico's president has rejected Trump's call that Mexico pay for the barrier.

Trump has repeatedly cited arrest statistics as evidence that his strategy is working.

Taxpayers forced to pay deportation appeals of illegal immigrants – Washington Examiner

The high costs of illegal immigrants filing deportation appeals in federal courts are paid by U.S. taxpayers, a little-known fact but a major driver in the escalation of cases that are clogging the legal docket, according to experts.

"Aliens should not be given more rights and better conditions than U.S. citizens," said Hans von Spakovsky, an expert on immigration and a former member of the Federal Election Commission.

Decrying the special treatment courts provide to illegals, he told a Center for Immigration Studies panel on Tuesday that unlike American citizens, undocumented immigrants don't have to pay most court costs, such as for records and transcripts, and the $110 filing fee is typically waived.

"American taxpayers are subsidizing the appeals of all these cases," said von Spakovsky.

He said that nearly all deportation decisions from the Board of Immigration Appeals are challenged. "That's because there's no cost to the illegal aliens. The filing fee is very low, to file an appeal it's $110," he said, citing a judge's recent congressional testimony. "However in a majority of cases that fee is waived," he added.

"Second the alien isn't charged for copies of the records or charged for copies of the transcripts, all of these are costs are paid for by the Department of Justice, and that means American taxpayers. So American taxpayers are subsidizing the appeals costs of all of theses cases, something that does not happen if an ordinary U.S. citizen is involved in a federal lawsuit," said von Spakovsky.

"There is absolutely nothing to stop the filing of frivolous and meritless cases," he added.

The Center for Immigration Studies panel addressed several other issues, including its recent report on the lack of immigration judges and the resulting case backlog.

Currently 334 judges are handling 610,000 cases, an average of 1,800 each.

Immigration Judge Lawrence O. Burman, also the secretary treasurer of the National Association of Immigration Judges, said he has a backlog of 6,000-7,000 cases, so many he's been told to stop scheduling more past 2020. As a result, he has set up a second, post-2020 calendar where he is penciling in future cases.

"I'm not going to live long enough" to get through them all, he joked.

Kelli Ward: Senator Flake’s Views On Illegal Immigration Sound Like Jeb! – FOX News Radio (blog)

Dr. Kelli Ward (R), Former Arizona State Senator, & candidate For U.S. Senate running against Senator Jeff Flake called into the Todd Starnes Show to talk about republicans refusing to stand by President Trump and why they need to get their act together and support President Trump's America first agenda. Dr. Ward took Senator Flake to task over his NY Times op-ed "Jeff Flake: We Need Immigrants With Skills. But Working Hard Is a Skill." by comparing his stance on immigration to former Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush. Ward also spoke about why she hopes Sheriff Arpaio is pardoned by President Trump and her hope that tonight's Presidential rally in Arizona isn't interrupted by radical protests

Kelli Ward on Senator Flake saying we need immigrants with skills

(WARD) Well it was pretty stunning when it yeah his book followed by the op-ed basically talking about how it's practically fine to break the law, that we need to import low skilled immigrants with strong backs so that they can provide cheap labor and you know I just think you know the more I hear him talk he's repeating democrat talking point again and again and again.

Kelli Ward on Senator Flake calling illegals are American's by choice who are inspiring.

(WARD) Well it is sad it almost sounds like a Jeb! and his thought that people who are coming here are just doing it out of love. There are plenty of people who cross our border every single month every single week who are coming here to do us harm. There are people who want to come here to better their lives and the ones who come the right way you understand there is a right path to come to this country should be able to prosper whenever they come but people who come the wrong way who sneak into our country should expect consequences not reward.

Kelli Ward on if Sheriff Joe Arpaio should be pardoned by President Trump

(WARD) I do I agree with congressman Franks with congressman Biggs with congressman Gosar, they've all come out in support of stopping the politically motivated use of our judicial system against political enemies. We saw it under the Obama administration to an extent like I have never seen and I'm glad that we have a law and order president in the white house now and so you know I'm interested to see. I hope that it Sheriff Arpaio wins his appeal case and he won't need a pardon and I hope he wins on appeal because he's been a champion just like you said of securing the border stopping illegal immigration and doing the job that the federal government refused to do so I hope I hope everything ends well for Sherriff Arpaio.

Kelli Ward on potential protests of President Trump's rally in Arizona tonight

(WARD) I hope that we learned our life in Charlottesville and that people who want to come and express their opinion and utilize their first amendment right to free speech no matter if it's offensive to me or to you, to come out and do that peacefully. remember that hatred bigotry and violence have no place in our society just like the President said and i think the phoenix believe are going to be out in full force i think most of the people that are going to come or are going to be supporters of the president. I think there will be factions that are anti Donald trump in their part of the resist movement and the indivisible and I think the police are going to be ready they're going to root out those few bad apples who might insight violence and we are going to have a great day here in Phoenix welcoming our President to our state. One of the things that really bothers me about that is I know that there are families who want to bring their children to see the President of the United States in person. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many people and I don't want a few violent people extremists to ruin that for those people.

Why Mike Pence Is Worse Than Donald Trump – The Nation.

You probably have these debates with your friends, too: Do we want Donald Trump to resign, or be impeached, which would leave us with Vice President Mike Pence in charge? Do we think Pence is better, or worse, than Trump? Is Pence more formidable politically? Will progressives chances still be better with the Orange Menace in the White House? Or would the low-charisma Pence, who looks like a B-movie producers idea of a president, be easier to defeat, especially given the GOP fratricide that would commence with Trumps departure, however it came about? (I guess I tipped my hand in that last sentence.)

I try never to care about the political implications of whether Trump should stay or go. He should go, because hes a racist authoritarian who got help from a foreign adversary to become president. He should go, because hes more likely to stumble into war than Pence is.

But I never let that obscure the truth, either: Pence is a far worse person, because of his creepy Handmaids Tale patriarchal approach to womens equality. But also because he usually knows hes lying about Trump, and their administrations agenda, and he lies anyway.

Exhibit A, for today anyway, is the way he defended Trumps reaction to Charlottesville on Tuesday morning. Its a perfect encapsulation of the way Pence appropriates American decency to defend his own indecency, and his bosss. Heres what he told NBCs Today show about why he supports Trumps call to keep Confederate monuments standing.

Im someone who believes in more monuments, not less monuments. What we ought to do is we ought to remember our history, he began. Monuments, he then argued, served to celebrate the progress that weve made since that history.

I dont know exactly what history Pence is comparing to that history, since its all history, but lets let him continue:

You know, when I walked, back in 2010, across the Edmund Pettus Bridge with John Lewis, arm in arm, and we remembered Bloody Sunday, and the extraordinary progress of the civil rights movement, I cant help but think that rather than pulling down monuments, as some are wont to do, rather than tearing down monuments that have graced our cities all across this country for years, we ought to be building more monuments.

What does that even mean? The Confederate monuments many of us want gone havent graced our cities; they blight them. Is Pence suggesting there should be a statue of 25-year-old John Lewis in the fetal position, with Thomas Merton in his book bag, trying to protect himself from the blows rained down by the sheriffs commanded by Selmas Jim Clark, the brutal segregationist who died insisting hed done the right thing on Bloody Sunday? I dont think Pence is suggesting that, though maybe he ought to.

Maybe the whole bridge should be blocked by statues of the human bodies that were beaten to the ground that day, to grind Selma traffic to a regular halt, to force contemplation. Maybe it should no longer be a bridge at all. Personally, Id prefer that we renamed Edmund Pettus Bridge the John Lewis Memorial Bridge, but I dont have a say in that. (Anyway, first Id want to know what Lewis thinks about it, and I dont know that yet.)

But I dont think any of that is what Pence is suggesting. I think he spewed Word Salad la Sarah Palin, only with better grammar. I dont think he gives a damn about the folks who protest these shameful statues. What was most galling about Pences comment, though, was that he used his bond with Lewis to clean up Trumps despicable equation of Nazis and white supremacists with their opponents, who are the modern-day incarnation of John Lewis. (Oh, and by the way, who are supported by John Lewis.)

There it is again, that brazen Republican attempt to duck the reason Trump is president: that the GOP has played on racial fear and resentment for 50-plus yearsall the way back to Selma. Thats why we have Trump, and Trump is why we have neo-Nazis and white supremacists trying to march through our streets. Trying is the operative word, as Boston showed last weekend, after the tragedy of Charlottesville. We are stronger than they are, and we will push them back. Everywhere.

A few Republicans will join us. Apostate conservative Jennifer Rubin, who is coming alive to the ways her party has used racial division to conquer, tweeted this about Pences sad effort to cover up Trumps Charlottesville idiocy:

Gaslighting is the right word, though no progressives will fall for it. Pence doesnt care, though. He plays to an audience of one, and that one is Donald Trump. If we are ever lucky enough to have a President Pence, lets hope that the mainstream media, congressional Democrats, and anti-Trump Republicans remember what a stooge he was for an incompetent, belligerent, popular-vote-losing president. If they do, well never have to worry about Mr. B-movie president ever being elected to be the real thing.

If they dont, well remind them. Early and often.
