Lockn’ 2017: 5 acts to watch for at this year’s festival – Lynchburg News and Advance

This years Lockn lineup features the usual suspects think Widespread Panic, The String Cheese Incident and Phil Lesh, as well as other big names in John Fogerty, The Avett Brothers and Brandi Carlile.

In honor of the festivals fifth year, here are five acts to watch for throughout the weekend (performances are subject to change):

Greensky Bluegrass, 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Main Stage

This Michigan quintet has been strumming since 2000, first as a bluegrass trio and now with more of an added electric rock n roll flair.

Their slow burn rise from those casual beginnings to sold-out Red Rocks shows and a main stage spot at Bonnaroo has allowed the band to find a comfortable niche within both the jam and string-band communities without becoming beholden to any one group of fans, Matt Inman wrote for Relix in March.

The group has been known to play trad-grass and covers of everyone from Prince to Pink Floyd and is known for its members extended improvisations, making it a great Lockn fit.

The Record Company, 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Main Stage

Grammy-nominated power trio The Record Company brings a sound that straddles the line between scuzzy rock riffs and bluesy vocals, so its no surprise its music has become a staple for TV.

In a 2016 Paste Magazine article, Joshua M. Miller noted the bands songs have been featured in beer and car commercials and on Showtimes Shameless, Nashville during its ABC run, and CBSs CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

The L.A. based-guys have toured across the country, opening for B.B. King, Buddy Guy and, recently, John Mayer; in 2015, they also supported Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke (another performer at this years Lockn).

Margo Price, 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Main Stage

Dont let the feminine vocals fool you. This chicks got a hardened backstory filled with made-for-country-song stories (including a brief jail stint) just ripe for the plucking.

In 2016, Duncan Cooper of The Fader called this singer/songwriter your new favorite Nashville badass, and one listen to her lyrics tells you why. Her refusal to shy away from the grittier truths made her debut album, Midwest Farmer's Daughter, an instant fan favorite, garnering praise from all the right people in the music biz.

And shes no stranger to the big stages. Last year, she was a musical guest on Saturday Night Live and joined Jack White (who released her first record and new EP through his Third Man Records) onstage at A Prairie Home Companion.

The Revivalists, 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Main Stage

I wrote about this New Orleans-based band when it headlined Devils Backbones inaugural Hoopla festival in 2016. With a sound that mixes jam band sensibilities with the jazz of New Orleans and the alternative touch of indie soul, the Revivalists have found success across musical borders, with 2015s Men Amongst Mountains.

The bands third full-length album earned it praise from NPR and a spot in Rolling Stone's March 2016 "10 New Artists You Need to Know," where the magazine noted the music is for fans of My Morning Jacket, Galactic and Alabama Shakes, as well as an Artist of the Month Slot on NBC's "Today."

Dirty Dozen Brass Band, 1:55 p.m. Sunday, Terrapin Station Porch

This high-octane institution returns to Lockn for the first time since 2013.

One of the original New Orleans jazz bands, DDBB is a world-famous institution with more than 40 years of performances, more than two dozen albums and collaborations with artists ranging from Dr. John and Dizzy Gillespie to Norah Jones, Elvis Costello and even Modest Mouse.

Founded in 1977, DDBB influenced the New Orleans jazz scene when it incorporated funk and bebop into its music and continues to do so with its interpretations of current hits like Rihannas Please Dont Stop the Music.

Four decades later, the group is still known for its high-octane performances.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band continues to be a national treasure: steeped in both the past and the present, impossible to categorize, and mighty funky, Mac Randall wrote for The News York Times in 2002.

Ann Coulter, Milo Yiannopoulos, Stephen Bannon Are Invited to Speak at UC-Berkeley – The Chronicle of Higher Education (blog)

A set of conservative firebrands, including Ann Coulter, Milo Yiannopoulos and the former Breitbart News executive and White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon have been invited to speak this September at the University of California at Berkeley.

The university is known as the birthplace of the free-speech movement on college campuses, and in recent months has seen violence erupt over speakers slated to appear there.

Dan Mogulof, a spokesman for the university, confirmed to The Chronicleon Wednesday evening that a student group, California Patriot, had invited the speakers for a series of events set to take place on the campus from September 24 to 27. Messages to the event organizer identified by Mr. Mogulof werent immediately returned on Wednesday afternoon. Carol Christ, the universitys new chancellor, also said in a statement on Wednesdaythat Mr. Yiannopoulos has been invited to speak on campus.

The university has the responsibility to provide safety and security for its community and guests, and we will invest the necessary resources to achieve that goal, she said in her statement. If you choose to protest, do so peacefully. That is your right, and we will defend it with vigor. We will not tolerate violence, and we will hold anyone accountable who engages in it.

Asked if the university was worried given the outbreak of violence that has emerged around recent rallies and demonstrations, Mr. Mogulof said yes. He added that it was important that the university host the event, though he said it would be deeply upsetting for some people.

Two of the speakers, Mr. Yiannopoulos and Ms. Coulter, had previously been scheduled to speak at the campus this year. But the event featuring Mr. Yiannopoulos,in February, was canceled after protests of the event turned violent. And Ms. Coultersplanned speechwas called off over safety concerns.

In the wake of the deadly violence in Charlottesville, Va. this month, at least four universities have refused to host the white nationalist Richard B. Spencer, citing security risks.

Ann Coulter: Peace Through Border Control – Breitbart News

But then the Emperor God gave a magnificent speech in Arizona Tuesday night. Curiously, when he talks to voters as opposed to his Cabinet and White House staff theres very little about sending more U.S. troops to die in the human meat-grinder of Afghanistan.

Trump got thunderous applause from his 30,000-person focus group for the wall, stepped-up deportations and Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio recently convicted of contempt for racially profiling Hispanics. But you could hear a pin drop when he mentioned Afghanistan, Nikki Haley and Gen. John Kelly. (At least he had the good sense not to bring up Goldman Sachs Gary Cohn again.)

There were long faces all over cable news after Trumps speech, which surely triggers the reward center in his brain, like giving a mouse cheese.

What was so refreshingly different about the Trump campaign was that the candidate didnt use any of the idiotic, consultant-written bromides offered by every other GOP presidential candidate for at least the past 30 years. Instead, he looked around the country, saw what the problems were and said hed fix them.

Here are the highlights from every speech by any Non-Trump candidate for the past several decades:

I listened to the American people.

People are frustrated.

This election is about the future!

It may not seem like it at first, but another one of those head-scratching cliches is: Peace through strength. During the campaign, this was a staple of knuckleheads like Jeb!, but Im sorry to report that our hero used it on the Arizona crowd, referring to his decision to send more troops to die in Afghanistan for no earthly purpose. The Swamp is sticky.

When Reagan said, peace through strength, it meant something. But 30 years after Reagan won the Cold War, anyone who uses this expression conveys only that he has no understanding of the current war.

During the Cold War, America was facing an aggressively imperialistic, nuclear-armed Soviet Union. By contrast, the main threat to Americans safety today comes not from a country, but from millions of individual savages spread throughout the globe.

Americans arent being slaughtered by invading Soviet troops, Red Dawn-style, but by Islamic terrorists on tourist visas flying commercial airplanes into our skyscrapers, and by first- and second-generation Muslim immigrants setting off bombs and shooting people at the Boston Marathon, American military bases, community centers, and gay nightclubs.

Americans are raped, addicted, and murdered not by the Red Army, but by millions of illegal aliens waltzing across our wide-open border.

Our freedoms are being taken away not by a foreign power, but by our own government in order to protect us from terrorists, international crime rings, and Mexican drug cartels operating in our own country.

Defeating a non-country adversary may seem an impossible task, but the savages are perfectly containable. Todays enemy has no capacity to harm a hair on a single Americans head as long as we dont let them come here.

We dont need a military victory. We need an immigration moratorium.

The Non-Trump Republicans promised us only more immigration and more wars. PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH!

How does a military buildup help Kate Steinle? How about the 3,000 Americans killed on 9/11? Did Obamas escalation of the war in Afghanistan protect soldiers at Fort Hood or nightclubbers in Orlando? Did it do anything for Grant Ronnebeck, who was fatally shot by an illegal alien robbing a convenience store in Mesa, Arizona, in 2015?

More than 1,600 American troops died in Afghanistan under Obama, and not one American is safer.

All we need to do to win the current war is: Keep our nuclear weapons in working order and stop allowing enemy forces into our country. If we must have troops constantly deployed somewhere, the only place theyd actually be useful is 10 feet into Mexico. (Let a court try to stop that!)

During the campaign, Little Marco dismissed as unrealistic Trumps proposed temporary suspension of Muslim immigration to our country including the more than 2 million Muslims weve taken in just since 9/11. Instead, Rubio proposed we do something achievable, like remake the entire Middle East with wars in Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Afghanistan.

Trump, and only Trump, promised to put our country first and protect our interests when it came to immigration and foreign wars. He didnt care that political correctness dictated putting Americas interests dead last.

But since becoming president, instead of draining the swamp, the swamp seems to have drained Trump. His agenda has been drowned out by the agenda of Washingtons Uni-Party.

Thats why all we ever hear about is tax cuts and war (unless Trump is speaking to one of his 30,000-person focus groups).

Rather than actually being like Reagan and winning the war were in, Trump has decided to continue Obamas unconstitutional executive amnesty opposition to which gave the GOP stunning victories in 2014 and 2016. This week, he grabbed the hot poker of Afghanistan, allowing ecstatic Democrats to scratch that disaster off Obamas Greatest Hits list. Now, its Trumps war.

I dont know why Trump would surround himself with people who oppose his agenda, but on Tuesday night he heard again from the people who see him as our countrys last hope. He should listen to them.

Patriots are Europeans! Eurocrat’s shock claim comparing nationalism to alcoholism – Express.co.uk

The first Vice-President of the European Commission made the shocking claim in a video discussing the risks of nationalism.

Mr Timmermans said: "Nationalism is like alcoholism: a short period of exaltation followed by a long period of headaches.

"If nationalism makes us poor, weak and morally insecure, how can it claim to be patriotic? To be a patriot is to be European, to be European is to be a patriot."

GETTY/EU COMMISSION

The footage was released to commemorate the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes which the EU celebrates annually in August.

He continued: "A true patriot is proud of his nation, wants it to be strong, peaceful, prosperous and values-based.

"To achieve that, a true patriot knows he needs unity, he wants openness, he craves cooperation with others. he sees the strength found in compromise, debate, and unity."

The European Union is currently facing growing dissent from member states.

Euroscepticism has spread throughout the union, with parties starting to question the functionality of the European Union.

In France, presidential candidate Marine Le Pen gained 33.9% of the popular vote running on a deeply anti-EU platform.

Italian Five Star Movement (M5S) is currently polling at 27.6% against ruling Democratic Party (PD)'s 26.9% ahead of the 2018 general elections.

The party has been very vocal in its critic of the European Union, especially in regards to matters concerning the Euro and the migrant crisis.
