Oil prices fall 2 pct on oversupply upstages Libya concerns – Nasdaq

Reuters

By Jessica Resnick-Ault

NEW YORK, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Oil prices tumbled more than 2.5 percent on Monday in volatile trade, as dollar strength and weak domestic demand data in China hammered prices that had received a short-lived boost on concerns about potential reductions in crude supply from Libya.

Global benchmark Brent crude futures settled down $1.37 or 2.63 percent at $50.73.

"It is a strong dollar, concern about China demand, and weak volumes," said Phil Flynn, an analyst with Price Futures Group in Chicago.

The dollar rose broadly as traders unwound bearish bets against the U.S. currency that have come in the wake of increasing tensions with North Korea and underwhelming inflation data.

The absence of further abrasive rhetoric by U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over the weekend helped bring investors back to the dollar, analysts said.

Oil prices fell on news that refinery runs in China dropped in July.

Analysts said the drop was steeper than expected, exacerbating concerns that a glut of refined fuel products could weaken Chinese demand for oil.

Efforts by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and other oil producers to limit output have helped lift Brent past $50 a barrel. Still, analysts and traders worry that U.S. output could undermine efforts to cut production.

U.S. shale output is expected to rise again in September, according to U.S. data issued late in the session. U.S. shale oil production for September which includes a new regional data input, is forecast to rise by 117,000 barrels per day to 6.15 million bpd, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said.

Trade was volatile, with prices falling early on the Chinese demand data, then retracing losses after Libya's national oil corporation said it was investigating security violations at the country's largest oil field. A disruption from the 270,000 bpd Sharara field could cut supplies from producer group OPEC. The NOC did not specify whether the violations had affected output at the field.

Rising production in Libya has added to the global crude glut. The OPEC member country is exempt from the global deal to cut output and has been trying to regain pre-war production levels.

Black Lives Matter Founder Claims Hate Speech Isn’t Protected By First Amendment – Washington Free Beacon

BY: Alex Griswold August 14, 2017 3:28 pm

The co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement claimed Monday on MSNBC that hate speech is not protected under the U.S. Constitution.

HostKaty Turasked Dignity and Power Now founder Patrisse Cullors about President Donald Trump's initial statement on the violence from white supremacists at a Charlottesville, Va. rally, which appeared to equate the neo-Nazis with the counter-protesters.

"Draw a distinction for me, if you will," Tur asked Cullors, whofirst spread the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.

"I think what is important at this moment is white nationalists are actually fighting to take away people's rights," she responded. "Black Lives Matter and groups like Black Lives Matter are fighting for equality."

"Hate speech, which is what we're seeing coming out of white nationalists groups, is not protected under the First Amendment rights," she continued.

Cullors is incorrect. Under existing Supreme Court precedent, the U.S. government cannot sanction or ban speech simply because it is hateful or unpopular.

That principle was most recently upheld in June in the case ofMatal v. Tam, when the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the government cannot deny trademarks to brand namesit finds offensive.

Justice Samuel Alito's majority opinionargued that the banning of hateful speech "strikes at the heart of the First Amendment. Speech that demeans on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful; but the proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence is that we protect the freedom to express the thought that we hate.'"

Hundreds of white nationalists marched on the University of Virginia campus Friday evening, where they clashed with counter-protesters. Shouting White Lives Matter, and Jews will not replace us, the white nationalists held tiki torches and rallied under a statue of former President Thomas Jefferson, the founder of UVA.

Thousands of demonstrators and counter-protesters areexpectedto rallySaturdayafternoon at Emancipation Park, formerly Lee Park, where several white nationalist groups are hosting a Unite the Right rally.

BLM joins dozens of other groups to protest the rally, saying that they plan to out number the rally-goers.

Men and women from state and local agencies will be in Charlottesville [on Saturday] to keep the public safe, McAuliffe said in a statement, and their job will be made easier if Virginians, no matter how well-meaning, elect to stay away from the areas where this rally will take place.

Eric Holder hit with Fort Hood ‘workplace violence’ mockery after Charlottesville remarks – Washington Times

Former Attorney General Eric Holders foray into a debate on Saturdays violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, quickly elicited reminders of his early stance on convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan.

It wasnt long after a white supremacist gathering Saturday turned deadly with the killing of Heather Heyer, 32, that former President Obamas top cop pronounced the ordeal domestic terrorism. Mr. Holders assessment of 20-year-old suspect James Alex Fields who careened his vehicle into a crowd of protesters prompted backlash by those familiar with the Justice Departments handling of the Nov. 5, 2009, Fort Hood massacre, which killed 13.

If ISIS rammed a car into a crowd this would be labeled quickly & logically. Charlottesville call it what it is, domestic terrorism, Mr. Holder tweeted Saturday night.

Jay Caruso of The Dallas Morning News, among many others, rhetorically fired back as Mr. Holders words spread across social media.

Seriously. Its not like some guy shot up a military base and people tried to call it workplace violence. Oh, wait, the writer tweeted Sunday.

Maybe you should sit this one out, Mr. Workplace Violence, added the popular social media pundit David Burge, aka Iowa Hawk.

Kind of like you calling the Ft.Hood shooting work place violence? Take a seat, youre dismissed, added another.

Hasan was eventually convicted Aug. 23, 2013, on 13 charges of premeditated murder and 32 of attempted murder.

President Trump condemned white supremacist groups Monday while speaking to reporters at the White House.

Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans, Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Fields was denied bail at an initial court hearing Monday, Reuters reported.
