Fake ICE fliers in DC tell people how to report illegal immigrants – Washington Examiner

Fake fliers purporting to be from Immigration and Customs Enforcement notifying people of how they can report an illegal immigrant were distributed around Washington, D.C., this week.

The fliers contained the logo from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and included details about the offenses related to harboring, encouraging or inducing and aiding or abetting illegal immigrants.

The posters also directed people to a phone number to call if they would like to report an illegal immigrant.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the fliers were not from the agency.

"Notices circulating in #Washington #DC are NOT from @ICEgov," Immigration and Customs Enforcement said on its Twitter account.

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser also said the fliers were fake.

"We have been alerted to flyers regarding US Immigration and Customs Enforcement please know that these are not real. We have been in contact with @DCPoliceDept and @DCDPW to have them removed. And a reminder that we respect all DC residents no matter their immigration status. Washington, DC remains a sanctuary city #DCvalues," Bowser said in a series of three tweets.

In a tweet from her personal account, Bowser encouraged people who see the posters to tear them down.

"Tear it down! DC is a sanctuary city. Clearly the flyer is meant to scare and divide our residents. We won't stand for it. #DCValues," she said.

Patriotism: The Last Refuge of an Illegal Immigrant Scoundrel … – Townhall

Samuel Johnson, the witty grammarian, dictionary compiler, and literary critic could put down the worst offenses with lightning fast rapier wit. One comes to mind in connection with the latest push for amnesty in Congress: Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Meaning? Every man lacking moral fiber will justify his plunge to unseen depths of depravity by waving the flag of his nation: I broke the law for the sake of my country! The more subtle criminalsincluding ambitious politicianswill pull out the patriotism card to get elected or to explain away bad votes. In the final calculation, they push to give themselves a personal advantage, often at the expense of the very country which they claim to champion: Look at all the flags on my website! Vote for me!

How does this unpatriotic play for patriotism connect with illegal immigration? A lighter form of amnesty is floating around, this time from Congressman Jeff Denham (R-CA). His ENLIST Act (H.R. 60) seems like a common-sense proposal. If illegal aliens meet key requirements and serve in the United States military, they can receive legal status. Sounds goodat first. If men and women put their lives on the line for the United States, why not reward their self-sacrifice with citizenship?

Historical references are crucial to explain why this proposal should be court-martialed and sent to the firing squad. During the waning era of the Western Roman Empire, the Romans recruited mercenaries from Germanic and Gallic tribes to restore their armed ranks. The allegiance of these outsider-soldiers sided with the commanding officers, not the Roman Emperor and Empire. The same barbarians recruited for their adopted homeland would eventually turn on their own neighbors and nation. This threat of internal dissension and demise cannot be ignored or overlooked. Citizenship is about embracing values, not just defeating foreign invaders.

Despite these serious concerns, Congressman Denham (R-Turlock) has introduced this measure repeatedly, and now fellow California Congressman Darrell Issa (whos giving conservatives more reasons not to support him in the upcoming election) has signed on. These and other Republicans (especially in California) are paying attention to Democratic talking points rather than fired-up Re-TRUMP-licanswho are fed up with amnesty and politicians who ignore the needs of American citizens.

Since these pro-illegal policies pushed by these politicians would endanger our country, why do they push this narrative? Why are these scoundrels in Washington targeting illegal alien veterans? They are banking on the idea that this small measure will temper criticism from angry constituents. In Santa Ana, California, a liberal sanctuary city right in the heart of conservative Orange County, California, Congressman Lou Correa hosted a town hall for illegal aliens (another one shut down by feckless liberals in the face of raging Trump supporters demanding the rule of law). Correa started off about the fear imposed on immigrant (read, illegal alien) communities. He then switched over to his upcoming visit to Tijuana to visit with deported veterans. They had green cards, but they broke the law (They got into trouble, according to Correa), and thus they were deported.

One woman attending Correas town hall denounced the illegal aliens whom Correa was championing. When he had mentioned their previous service in our military, her criticism dampened somewhat. Whos going to speak against military service for the United States, right? These amnesty panderers think that mentioning the word veteran will excuse crimes of the past. Wrong, I say! Military service is not a Get Out of Jail Free card. Every veteran should be thanked for their service, but it doesnt mean they can commit crimes or limit the rights of everyday citizens.

Many times this year alone, liberal veterans have tried to silence my criticism: Are you a veteran? Have you fought for this country? My retort: You fought for my right to speak. Are you now undermining your own efforts by telling me that I cannot be here?

Veterans who commit crimes should be tried, convicted and sentenced, just like the rest of us. They fought for the rule of law overseas, and they are called to abide by those standards here. Read up on Randy Duke Cunningham, a Republican congressman who once represented San Diego County. He was convicted of bribery and corruption charges in 2005. During the sentencing hearing, his defense attorney pled for clemency because of his military service. No deal, said the judge.

This rule of law thing seems to escape amnesty panderers like Correa, however. The illegals who served in our military should have never enrolled in the first place. They should not have been in our country! Lets have true standards, please! Besides, if the ENLIST Act becomes law, EXPECT more illegals rushing into our country to enlist for legal status. No deal. Its time to put aside the memes and patronizing half-measures of our politicians. They want to play the patriotism card to sell their constituents on partial amnesty, and I am having none of it. Once again, I will share with you the list of 200yes, that manycosponsors for Denhams ENLIST Act. Tell them No Way.

The next time your Congressman pushes this Amnesty for illegal alien veterans card, just give them a sample of Samuel Johnsons wit: Patriotism is the last resort of a politician er, scoundrel!

Ron Johnson demands IRS review of illegal immigrant tax credits – Washington Examiner

Sen. Ron Johnson is calling on Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to review the IRS's failure to crack down on "fraudulent overpayments" of the child tax credit to illegal immigrants under IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

In a letter to Mnuchin sent last week and made public Thursday, Johnson, who chairs the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, said the IRS is making overpayments to illegal immigrants who apply for the Additional Child Tax Credit, the refundable part of the child tax credit. Those payments are possible because applicants do not have to submit their Social Security number.

"Under the Obama administration ... the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) continued to provide a significant incentive for illegal immigration by failing to prevent the issuance of billions of dollars in fraudulent overpayments of the Additional Child Tax Credit to illegal aliens," Johnson wrote in the May 26 letter. He cited a 2011 report showing that $4.2 billion was paid out to people who not legally eligible to work in the United States.

"Despite the administration's prioritization of border security and calls from Republicans, Democrats, and an independent inspector general for the IRS to correct this problem, the committee learned in recent testimony that the IRS, under Commissioner John Koskinen, allows these fraudulent overpayments to persist," he wrote. Johnson asked the Treasury Department to review those payments for possible fraud.

For years, people have filed for ACTC payments with their Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, including many who are living in the U.S. illegally or are foreign workers. Most recently, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration determined that the IRS paid out $3.4 billion to ITIN filers as of 2015.

"The IRS's failure to remedy this vulnerability on its own accord not only continues to cost taxpayers billions of dollars every year, but also provides an incentive for illegal immigration into the country," Johnson added.

The Wisconsin Republican asked the Treasury Department to brief the committee's staff on ACTC fraud by June 9.

Improper payments continue to be a problem for the IRS. According to the inspector general's report in early May, the rate of improper payments hovers around 25 percent for the earned income tax credit, the ACTC, and the American Opportunity tax credit, which benefits college students.

President Trump's budget called for major savings through new efforts to make sure illegal immigrants do not receive these credits.

Mike Pence Isn’t Sure Why So Many People Think Climate Change Is A ‘Paramount Issue’ – HuffPost

Vice President Mike Pencesaid Friday that he doesnt understand why so many people are making such a big deal out of climate change, a phenomenon connected to such global issues as declining food security andwildlife populations.

Pence mocked the liberal left for condemning President Donald Trumps decision to pull out of the historic Paris Agreement, an international pact that aims to curb global warming by reducing carbon emissions.

For some reason or another, this issue of climate change has emerged as a paramount issue for the left in this country and around the world,Pence said during an appearance on Fox & Friends.

At least 97 percent of climate scientists agree that human activity has significantly contributed to the climate-warming trends of the past century, which threaten biodiversity and coastal communities and have contributed to an increase in extreme weather events.

Environmental activists, major corporations and world leaders wereoutragedwhen Trump announced on Thursday that the U.S. would withdraw from the historic accord.

The U.S. decision to leave the #ParisAgreement is a decision to leave humanitys last chance of securing our childrens future on this planet, tweeted Margot Wallstrm, Swedens minister of foreign affairs.

But Pence dismissed any apocalyptic predictions surrounding Trumps decision, noting that the U.S. has already demonstrated real progress in reducing carbon emissions.

Its long been a goal of the liberal left in this country to advance a climate change agenda, Pence said.

Pence plane missed runway target by nearly 2000 feet, NTSB says – CNN

(CNN)The plane carrying then-vice presidential candidate Mike Pence that skidded off a New York runway last fall was nearly 2,000 feet off the normal touchdown point and skidded off the landing strip at about 45 miles per hour, according to new details released by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Moderate to heavy rain was falling at New York's LaGuardia Airport on October 27, 2016, when the chartered Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 flying from Fort Dodge, Iowa, came in for a landing. At the time, other pilots reported that the runway was wet but landing conditions were "fair" or "good."

The details of the incident -- which resulted in no serious injuries to the 48 occupants, though three flight attendants were briefly taken to the hospital to be checked out for back pain -- were made available Thursday in nearly 400 pages of documents. A full report won't be released for at least several months, so a final conclusion as to why the plane failed to properly land has not yet been reached.

What is made clear in the documents, however, is that the when the plane finally landed -- traveling at about 150 miles per hour -- there was less than 2,800 feet of runway left. The automatic speed breaks on the airplane were out of service, so the crew planned to follow a procedure to manual deploy them.

The speedbreaks didn't fully extend until the plane had traveled an additional 1,250 feet down the runway, and eight seconds took place between touchdown and the time max reverse thrust was initiated, according to the documents.

In a transcript of the plane's cockpit voice recorder, the pilots can be heard talking about the incident shortly after the plane stops.

"We should have went around," one of the pilots says, according to the transcript.

"My career just ended," one adds as they prepare the plane for shut down. "Mine too," the other replies.

A Secret Service agent is recorded entering the cockpit to check on the situation. After being assured no evacuation is necessary, he compliments the pilots.

"Nice job," the agent tells the pilots, according to the transcript.

"Huh?" one of the pilots responds.

"Nice job. You stopped at least," the agent replies.

The plane that was carrying Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence sits on the runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport October 27, 2016 in New York.

There was some confusion in the cockpit after the plane touched down and as the crew was trying to make it stop.

First officer James Conrad told investigators he later realized the captain, Michael Lorenz, had started trying to control the plane as they were rolling down the runway, without announcing he was taking over.

Gov. Pence: Pilots braking very aggressively 01:38

"He felt that there was a 'lack of communication' as he did not hear the captain say, 'I have control,'" according to a summary of the first officer's interview. "After they had stopped, the captain had said he was trying to get off on the last taxiway. Then, he (the first officer) realized that the captain was also on the controls when he was."

The first officer also declined to answer several questions about the captain.

"When asked how he enjoyed flying with the captain, he declined to provide an answer," a document says. "When asked about the captain's proficiency or for areas that could be improved, when compared to others he had flown with, he declined to answer."

Occupants inside the 737 were confused and startled as they immediately realized the landing was not going smoothly. Reporters, located near the back of the jet, could feel the initial skidding before the plane ran into safety material, designed to crumble beneath the plane at the end of the runway.

Once the plane had stopped, Pence came to the back of the aircraft to check on reporters and the Secret Service, asking if everyone was all right.

Fire and ambulance surrounded the airplane within minutes and evacuated it. The future vice president and his staff stepped onto the runway into the rain. Half of the plane was on the grass.

At the time, Pence told reporters he felt the plane fishtail after it landed, but added that he kept a saying from his son, who is a Marine Corps aviator, in his mind following the incident: "Every landing you walk away from is a successful landing."

Since being elected vice president, Pence usually flies US Air Force aircraft.
