Western Wall battle: Viewing Jewish culture wars from a balcony in Israel’s Galilee region – GetReligion (blog)

The nod to Orthodox political pressure enraged the organized non-Orthodox Jewish establishment. From cries of boycott Israeli leaders to claims that Israel gave U.S. Jews the finger, liberal journalistic pundits and organizational leaders alike seemingly competed to express the depth of their outrage and disgust.

(A second decision negating a provision that made conversion to Judaism somewhat easier within Israel was also made, though it's attracted much less attention outside of Israel, where conversion requirements are generally less stringent than they are in Israel.)

Consider all this the Jewish worlds internal culture war --a struggle between strict adherence to traditional religious practice versus broadening the practice to accommodate contemporary sensibilities.

Ironically, the brouhaha is of little concern to the average Israeli Jew, the majority of whom are by no means strictly Orthodox, if not outright secular (though culturally staunchly Jewish). Only the minority of ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jews are deeply invested in the struggle, resistant as they are to all religious liberalization.

But it's another story for liberally religious North American and other diaspora Jews, who are overwhelmingly non-Orthodox. (In the United States, the vast majority of religiously involved Jews are connected to the Reform and Conservative movements -- the latter, despite its name, is also left of center.)

For them --and I count myself among them --the issue goes to the core of their increasingly fraught relationship with an Israel seen as religiously dominated by a myopic Orthodoxy more devoted to pushing its narrow political agenda than caring about international Jewish support for the nation that, when threatened, has looked to this same external backing for its very survival.

If you need some basic background on the dispute, click here (The New York Times)>, or here (The Times of Israel),or here (Jewish Telegraphic Agency).

Why would the Israeli coalition government led by Benyamin Netanyahu take this step?

Wily politician that he is, he knew the reaction it would generate at a time when legions of diaspora Jewish leaders have warned that Israels right wing political leadership has alienated non-Orthodox, non-Israeli, liberal Jews --the young in particular --straining their needed support for Israels national survival.

The answer is simple: Israel is more than the Historical Jewish homeland. It's also a modern nation with its own distinct political system and perceived needs. Jerusalem --and certainly not Amirim, for that matter --is not New York or Los Angeles, the bi-coastal centers of American Jewish life.

This analysis piece from The Forward, North Americas premier liberal Jewish newspaper, lays it out.So does this opinion piece distributed by Religion News Service. Note that both these pieces were written by prominent liberal Jews.

Both make the point, in much greater and important detail, of course -- which is why I'm not making it easy for you by simply pulling out a nut graph or two -- that I made above. Read one or both of them to gain a full understanding of the issues backstory.

Religion journalists: Your stories on Jewish reaction in your neck of the woods will be enhanced by accessing this background.

Also read this news release issued by the ultra-Orthodox America Jewish organization Agudath Israel to better understand the strict traditionalist argument.

To reiterate: Israel is not the Upper West Side of Manhattan or the west San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.

Additionally, Israels religiously right wing ultra-Orthodox Jews care little about the cries that international Jewish support for the State of Israel --or Zionism itself --is at stake. For them, it's more about faith, the religion of Judaism and it's survival in its most traditional form.

Lastly, Israeli politicians act as politicians do world wide. Priority number one is self-preservation.

As I said, it's a culture war. And like the parallel conflict convulsing the United States over issues of gender, sexuality and public spending, how it all ends has the potential to divide international Jewish society just as its American equivalent has the potential to further tear apart the already divided larger American society.

For the moment, though, I'm going back to staring at the view from my guest house deck.

I need the break.

Who Didn’t Jay-Z Come For in 4:44 – The Root

(Photo by Dave Kotinsky/Getty Images for Spike)

Jay-Z got his ass in formation on his 4:44 album, and of course many people across social media have been trying to figure out all of the subliminal shots the rapper took.

Straight off the top, theres the first song, Kill Jay-Z, and its rife with subs aimed at Kanye West, his own marriage and theres even a possible shot at Future thrown in.

I know people backstab you, I felt that too/But this fuck everybody attitude aint natural/But you aint the same, this aint Kumba Ye/But you got hurt because you think kumbaye/You give him $20 million without blinking/he gave you 20 minutes on stage, fuck what was he thinking?/Fuck wrong with everybody? is what you saying/But if everyone is crazy, youre the one thats insane

Ohhh ... so did Jay give Kanye money to go on tour? Only for him to have a mental health crisis and ended up just ranting on stage? Will Kanye have to pay Jay-Z back like a payday loan?

You almost went Eric Bent/Let the baddest girl in the world get away/I dont even know what else to say/Nigga, never go Eric Bent

On Beyonces Lemonade, she made reference to Jays infidelity, and of course the infamous Becky with the good hair. It seems as though Jay is admitting to losing the baddest girl in the world, just like Eric Benet lost Halle Berry back in the day.

And of course, Benets current wife probably woke him out of his sleep this morning, so he had to respond. Read his response, but stay for the replies under it:

In the future, other niggas playin football with your son/You had lost it, 13 bottles of Ace of Spade what it did to Boston

More infidelity talk? Or is this a shot at Future and Russell Wilson playing football with his son? Who knows, but I know Ive tried Ace of Spade and it was disgusting.

Throughout the rest of 4:44, which I listened to at the crack of dawn on Friday, Jay talks about everything from gentrification in The Story of O.J; to taking aim at Princes attorney and longtime friend Londell McMillan and accusing him of making money of his death in Caught Their Eyes; and the pice de rsistance comes on Family Feud when Al Sharpton, Bill Cosby and younger rappers arent even safe.

Im tryna fix you/Im tryna get these niggas with no stripes to be official/Yall think small, I think Biggie/Yall whole pass is in danger, ten Mississippi/Al Sharpton in the mirror takin selfies/How is him or Pill Cosby sposed to help me?

Whether youre a fan of Jay-Z or not, you cant ever deny his word play, or the ability to create mass hysteria and fanfare whenever he drops an album.

The feud between Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity is bigger than them – Washington Post

Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity represent two types of President Trump supporters.

The Coulter faction's principal loyalty is to the ideas Trump embodied during the campaign. The Hannity group's primary allegiance is to Trump himself.

The split has always been there, but now it is widening as Coulter and those in her camp grow impatient for Trump to make good on his promises, and become frustrated by the Hannity bloc's lack of interest in holding the president accountable.

Tensions erupted on Wednesday when Coulter ripped Hannity for editing an interview that aired on his Fox News show last Thursday in which Coulter criticized Trump's inclusion of Goldman Sachs alumnisuch as chief economic adviser Gary Cohn in his administration. Here's some of what Coulter wrote in a columnpublished by Breitbart News.

Sean Hannity, bless his heart, has the zeal of the late Trump convert. He would endorse communism if Trump decided to implement the policies of The Communist Manifesto. (Which the GOPs health care bill actually does!)

On his show last Thursday, he tried to get me to defend Trumps rich person remarks about Cohn. I wish you could see the segment, but, unfortunately, Hannity decided no one would ever see it NOT, I hasten to add, because he would ever censor criticism of Trump, but simply because he ran out of time.

In a pretaped interview. It was a time problem. (It may not be evident to most viewers, but three minutes MUST be left at the end of every Hannity show for Nerf ball throwing.)

With the zealotry of those who came late to the Trump party, Hannity fully endorsed Trumps faith in Cohn, adding, I never got a job from a poor man!

Those of us who have been here for a while unlike Cruz- and Rubio-supporting Hannity know how to party responsibly. The best way we serve the people we admire is to tell them the truth. (Someday, no doubt, Nancy Pelosi will wish she had been surrounded by fewer Yes Men.)

The motto of we longtime Trump supporters is: NO TREATS FOR DOING NOTHING!

Hannity, who called Coulter a friend and said we love having you on during the part of the interview that made air last week, quickly returned fire on Twitter.

Hannity added that he was not late to what Coulter called the Trump party. Late is a subjective term, but recall that Hannity strongly protested Ted Cruz's accusation, during the Republican presidential primary, that Hannity favored Trump over the rest of the GOP field.

Hannity did not formally endorse Trump until the billionaire was the last Republican standing. He wanted to be seen as neutral while the race was in progress, but now he wants to be seen as a longtime Trump backer.

Anyway, the nature of Trump support not the duration is at the heart of this feud. Coulter might not be ready to jump off the Trump Train, but she has publicly vented her dismay at the president's lack of progress on his populist, nationalist agenda.

Meanwhile, Hannity seems to value Trump's personal qualities so highly that he is not bothered by the absence of funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, the presence of Wall Street bankers in high-ranking jobs or the details of a GOP health-care plan that does not amount to a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Unless Trump starts delivering more of what he pledged on the campaign trail, the segments of his base that supported him for different reasons represented by Coulter and Hannity are likely to drift further apart.
