SEO: The Free Beginner’s Guide from Moz

New to SEO? Need to polish up your knowledge? The Beginner's Guide to SEO has been read over a million times and provides comprehensive information you need to get on the road to professional quality Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

SEO is a marketing discipline focused on growing visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results. SEO encompasses both the technical and creative elements required to improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in search engines. There are many aspects to SEO, from the words on your page to the way other sites link to you on the web. Sometimes SEO is simply a matter of making sure your site is structured in a way that search engines understand.

SEO isn't just about building search engine-friendly websites. It's about making your site better for people too. At Moz we believe these principles go hand-in-hand.

This guide is designed to describe all areas of SEOfrom finding the terms and phrases (keywords) that generate traffic to your website, to making your site friendly to search engines, to building links and marketing the unique value of your site. If you are confused about this stuff, you are not alone, and we're here to help.

The majority of web traffic is driven by the major commercial search engines, Google, Bing, and Yahoo!. Although social media and other types of traffic can generate visits to your website, search engines are the primary method of navigation for most Internet users. This is true whether your site provides content, services, products, information, or just about anything else.

Search engines are unique in that they provide targeted trafficpeople looking for what you offer. Search engines are the roadways that make this happen. If search engines cannot find your site, or add your content to their databases, you miss out on incredible opportunities to drive traffic to your site.

Search queriesthe words that users type into the search boxcarry extraordinary value. Experience has shown that search engine traffic can make (or break) an organization's success. Targeted traffic to a website can provide publicity, revenue, and exposure like no other channel of marketing. Investing in SEO can have an exceptional rate of return compared to other types of marketing and promotion.

Search engines are smart, but they still need help. The major engines are always working to improve their technology to crawl the web more deeply and return better results to users. However, there is a limit to how search engines can operate. Whereas the right SEO can net you thousands of visitors and increased attention, the wrong moves can hide or bury your site deep in the search results where visibility is minimal.

In addition to making content available to search engines, SEO also helps boost rankings so that content will be placed where searchers will more readily find it. The Internet is becoming increasingly competitive, and those companies who perform SEO will have a decided advantage in visitors and customers.

The world of SEO is complex, but most people can easily understand the basics. Even a small amount of knowledge can make a big difference. Free SEO education is widely available on the web, including in guides like this. Combine this with a little practice and you are well on your way to becoming a guru.

Man Accused of ‘Intentionally’ Shooting at George …

A man was arrested in Florida today and accused of "intentionally" shooting at George Zimmerman's car earlier this week, police said.

Detectives said they determined Matthew Apperson "did intentionally fire his weapon into the vehicle occupied by George Zimmerman without provocation," the Lake Mary Police Department said in a news release this evening.

Apperson was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and firing a deadly missile into an occupied conveyance, police said.

Apperson turned himself into the police early this evening and was taken to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, police said.

According to an arrest report released by the Lake Mary police, Apperson "has exhibited unusual behaviors" and "It appears that Apperson has a fixation on Zimmerman."

Apperson's attorney, Mark NeJame, said in a statement tonight, "the case will proceed through the criminal justice system appropriately and ultimately a determination will be made as what truly happened. Mr. Apperson will continue not to comment until such time as it may be deemed appropriate."

NeJame said "bond is set at $35,000 and his release has been arranged."

Man charged with shooting into George Zimmerman’s truck …

Story highlights Matthew Apperson is released from jail after posting bail Zimmerman and Apperson, have had an ongoing dispute, police say

Matthew Apperson turned himself in to authorities Friday and was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and firing a deadly missile into an occupied conveyance, an arrest report said.

Apperson posted bail and was released Saturday, according to the Seminole County Jail.

Zimmerman and Apperson have been in an ongoing dispute, police said, with Apperson calling them last year because he felt threatened by Zimmerman.

On Monday, Zimmerman flagged down a Lake Mary police officer shortly after 1 p.m., saying he had been involved in a shooting. At about the same time, someone called 911 for Apperson to say he was the other person involved in the shooting. Zimmerman was taken to the hospital for treatment and released.

In a later interview with police, Zimmerman said he was driving when a man in a car threatened and shot into his truck, an arrest report said.

Apperson later told police Zimmerman made a threat and pointed a gun at him while he was in his car, so he fired one shot at Zimmerman's truck, the report said. Zimmerman told police he didn't point a gun at Apperson.

Zimmerman became well known after he was charged with fatally shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin. A jury acquitted him in 2013.

He's made news with other incidents since then.

In November 2013, police arrested Zimmerman at his then-girlfriend's home in Apopka, Florida, after an apparent fight. The woman later asked that the charges be dropped and Zimmerman was not prosecuted.

The former neighborhood volunteer told a friend 'It just wasn't my time to go.'

But the near miss has shaken up the 38-year-old so much that he is now considering leaving Florida for good to start a new life in another state.

Police in Lake Mary, Florida, are investigating the incident in which a bullet entered Zimmerman's car through the passenger window and lodge in the roof of his SUV.

Zimmerman suffered minor injuries from flying glass - but has acknowledged to friends he could have been killed.

Matthew Apperson arrested after shooting involving George …

Lake Mary police arrested a Winter Springs man Friday on charges related to a shooting involving George Zimmerman earlier this week.

Matthew Apperson, 35, turned himself in Friday evening, police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett said.

Apperson was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and firing a deadly missile into an occupied conveyance.

"After conducting numerous interviews throughout the week, detectives determined that Mr. Apperson did intentionally fire his weapon into the vehicle occupied by George Zimmerman without provocation," Gillett said in a statement.

Apperson is being held on no bond, Seminole County Sheriff's spokeswoman Kristen Bentsen said.

Apperson is accused of firing into a car Zimmerman was driving Monday. Zimmerman had only minor injuries from glass cutting his face.

Zimmerman and Apperson clashed twice in September. Both times, Apperson declined to press charges against him.

After Monday's incident, Apperson told police that Zimmerman pointed a gun at him and said, "I'm going to kill you," a police report shows.

Apperson said that's why he fired one shot into the car, according to the police report. He would not answer more questions.

On Wednesday, Zimmerman told a much different version of the story. Zimmerman told police that he was making a U-turn on West Lake Mary Boulevard when Apperson drove up behind him and yelled, "You remember me, you fat [expletive]?" through his open passenger's side window.
