Letter: Black is not white and white is not black

I am writing in response to a letter that stated that Eric Holder is the cause of the racist problem in Ferguson, Mo., that led to the street violence after the death of Michael Brown. The quote I am responding to was The purpose of this letter. is to show where the true racism started and where it continues with the office of the Attorney General Eric Holder.

As the story of the long term racist behavior in Ferguson unfolds including the harassment of the African American community for the smallest of infractions including jay walking and fining them excessively, even jailing them when they could not pay as little at $100 racism that was perpetuated by the collusion of Judge Ronald Brockmeyer, the clerk of the court, the chief of police, and some police officers and who knows how many others, it becomes painfully clear that there was a long term racist problem of gargantuan proportions in that town. Fortunately, that judge has been dismissed, two police officers fired, the clerk of the court fired, and the chief of police has resigned. That is for starters.

These changes have come about as a result of the careful investigation of the department of justice under the direction of Eric Holder who brought the dreadful size of the problem to light.

How anyone could see him as the cause of the problem in Ferguson instead of the direly needed solution, is beyond me. People sometimes want to make political capital by saying black is white and white is black.

The facts however speak for themselves. Eric Holder is to be commended for his prompt action in this matter. No way is he the cause of the problem.

When any community is so out of control that it is literally robbing its minority citizens in order to support its budget with fines, there is something that needs to be corrected. Thank God there are still decent public servants like Eric Holder that can point out the truth and insist upon positive change.

Kamala Harris raises $2.5M for her U.S. Senate run in California

LOS ANGELES -- Democrat Kamala Harris has raised $2.5 million since mid-January for her U.S. Senate run in California, giving her an early financial edge in the 2016 contest, her campaign announced Monday.

Competitive races are costly, and analysts predict Harris could need $30 million or more by Election Day next year. She is the only major Democrat in the race so far, although potential contenders include several members of Congress.

Harris banked "a lot of money, but it costs a lot of money to run statewide in California," said Claremont McKenna College political scientist Jack Pitney.

"By itself, it's not enough to keep other candidates out of the race. But together with her other advantages, other potential candidates have to weigh their options carefully," Pitney said.

Harris entered the race on Jan. 13, seeking the seat being vacated by Democrat Barbara Boxer. Since that time, Harris has concentrated on raising money and rolling out endorsements to deter possible rivals. Meanwhile, as state attorney general, she can generate consistent headlines to grab public attention without spending campaign dollars.

The only established Republican in the race is two-term state Assemblyman Rocky Chavez. Democratic Reps. Loretta Sanchez, Adam Schiff and Xavier Becerra are considering Senate bids.

Harris raised $1.6 million in March alone, or an average of about $50,000 a day. After expenditures, she has about $2.2 million in the bank.

From January through March, nearly 5,000 contributions came in amounts of $100 or less, among about 6,500 donations overall.

Harris said in a statement that she is grateful for the support. "We are well on our way toward building a strong grass-roots campaign that will reach every community of California," she said.
