Lawsuit accuses Comcast, Al Sharpton of discriminating …

A lawsuit against Comcast, Time Warner Cable Inc., Rev. Al Sharpton and the NAACP alleges that the mediacompanies discriminated against black-owned businessesand paid activists like Sharpton towhitewash its practices. The complaint alleges that Comcast gavelarge donations toSharpton, the NAACP and other civil rights groups to make it appear that the cable company was promoting diversity, even while it was failing to follow through on a promise to do so.

The lawsuit, seeking $20 billion, was filed in Los Angeles federal court Friday by Entertainment Studios, a television company founded by black producer and comedian Byron Allen and the National Association of African-American Owned Media (NAAAOM).The complaint, which comes as regulators mull a $45-billionmerger between Comcast andTWC, alleges that Comcast has refused to do business with Allen and other black media executives.

Comcast has engaged in, and is engaging in, pernicious, intentional racial discrimination in contracting, itreads. Whether or not it gets anywhere is another question. Anyone can file a lawsuit alleging anything and claiming any amount of money.

Both Sharpton and Comcast dismissed the allegations Monday. In an interview with Variety, Sharpton calledthe lawsuit a bogus statement from a person who has no credibility and he told the Hollywood Reporter that he will bebringing counterclaims for defamation.

The National Action Network also questioned Allens credibility initsstatement to the Hollywood Reporter.

We would gladly defend our relationship with any company as well as to state on the record why we found these discriminatory accusations made by said party to be less than credible and beneath the standards that we engage in.

The lawsuit also accuses Sharpton, the National Action Network (the non-profit civil rights organization he founded in 1991), the NAACP and the National Urban League, claimingthat the groups signedsham diversity agreements with Comcast in exchange for donations, knowing that the cable company would leverage the agreements to mask itsdiscriminatory practices.

The complaint particularly calls out Sharpton and his non-profit, which it says has a business model and track record of obtaining payments from corporate entities in exchange for his support. This critique has been leveled at him before, in the Daily Beast and the New York Post, though neither accusation came of anything.

Thisis the second complaintfrom Entertainment Studios and NAAAOM, whose president Mark DeVitre is also an executiveat Allens company. In December the groupfiled a $10 billion lawsuitagainst AT&T and DirectTV, accusing the groups of similar discrimination. No otherblack-owned companiesjoined the accusations against Comcast.

Eric Garners Daughter Suggests Al Sharpton Is About Money

A new undercover video from Project Veritas, the conservative investigative organization led by well-known provocateur James OKeefe has released undercover video purportedly showing relatives of both Michael Brown and Eric Garner criticizing Al Sharpton and his National Action Network (NAN).

The big news-making part of the video, however, is when Garners daughter, Erica Snipes, 24, suggests Sharpton and his group are all about money and promoting their organization.

As with most OKeefe videos, the footage is heavily edited at times with jump-cuts between the end of a question and the subjects purported answer but Snipes does clearly suggest Sharptons group has treated her unfairly.

You think Al Sharpton is kind of like a crook in a sense? the undercover Project Veritas staffer asked while posing as a Garner supporter during a rally in Staten Island.

Hes about this, Snipes replied, while rubbing her fingers together.

Hes about money with you? the undercover camera operator clarified for Snipes.

Yeah, the daughter replied.

Snipes had more direct words for NANs Staten Island director Cynthia Davis, who she said has repeatedly attacked her for not including the logo of Sharptons organization on fliers for pro-Garner events.

Instead of me, he wants his face in front, Snipes told the undercover person, referring to Sharpton and NANs desire to have their logo front and center.

Al Sharpton paid for the funeral, Snipes later added. [Davis] is trying to make me feel like I owe them.

Hulu inks exclusive agreement to stream CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

Paul Lilly | Feb. 23, 2015

Hulu Plus subscribers will have plenty of time to don their detective caps as the streaming service just inked a multi-year agreement with CBS securing exclusive rights to stream every episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation ever produced.

Hulu Plus subscribers will have plenty of time to don their detective caps as the streaming service just inked a multi-year agreement with CBS securing exclusive rights to stream every episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation ever produced.

That comes to more than 300 episodes from every past season, enough to keep viewers occupied for several weeks of binge watching and that's if they don't take time for such distractions as work, family, and personal hygiene.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has aired since October of 2000 and is a staple of the red-hot crime drama genre that it helped popularize. Now in its 15thseason, the show has won numerous awards and spawned several spin-offs, including CSI: Miami and CSI: NY, both of which it managed to outlive.

This is the first time that CBS has made the series available to a streaming service, and as you can imagine, Hulu is sitting on cloud nine. Likewise, it's another indicator that broadcast channels are becoming increasingly comfortable making their content available to streaming services.

"The original series from the most successful franchise in television history has been licensed to the SVOD market for the first time," said CBS's Chief Corporate Content Licensing Officer Scott Koondel. "This agreement and previous deals with our partners at Hulu further validates how well CBS procedural dramas perform on subscription services."

Hulu Plus subscribers will be able to begin streaming past seasons and episodes of CSI in April. The deal with CBS, however, does not include the aforementioned spin-offs or CSI: Cyber, currently in its inaugural season. In addition, it's unclear how long it will take new seasons to join the back catalog after they air.

Why this matters: There's a lot of activity in the streaming space as competing services try to get a leg up on each other. One of the ways to do that is by signing exclusive agreements; not only did Hulu do that here, but it did it with a highly popular show that's still producing new episodes. The deal is also another sign that Hulu's relationship with CBS remains strong.CSI: Crime Scene Investigation will be joined by all previous seasons of CBS'sElementary, an exclusive arrangement Hulu negotiated through a prior deal.
