Republicans at odds over immigration

Senate and House Republicans are fighting over who should move first to break the stalemate over funding the Department of Homeland Security.

Senate Majority Leader MitchMcConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday the House will have to pass a new bill because the Senate cant pass the Houses initial legislation, which would overturn President Obamas executive actions on immigration shielding millions from deportation.

Speaker John Boehners (R-Ohio) office pushed back, arguing there is little point in additional House action.

McConnells and Boehners offices both put the blame on Senate Democrats, who have repeatedly blocked the House bill from progressing by filibustering procedural motions.

Sixty votes would be needed to move the House bill forward, and Republicans have won no more than 53.

Its clear we cant get on the bill. We cant offer amendments to the bill. And I think it would be pretty safe to say were stuck because of Democratic obstruction on the Senate side, McConnell said.

Michael Steel, Boehners spokesman, said the pressure is on Senate Democrats who claim to oppose Obamas immigration action but are filibustering a bill to stop it.

Senate Democrats and the White House are showing no signs that they are feeling any pressure.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is scheduled to end after Feb. 27, and Democrats say Republicans are jeopardizing the nations security with a fight over a policy issue. They are demanding the GOP agree to a clean funding bill stripped of measures attacking Obamas immigration actions.

The Republican majority is twiddling its thumbs as it gets closer and closer to shutting down DHS, said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.). We Democrats have pushed for a clean DHS funding bill followed by a robust debate on immigration reform. But the Republicans have insisted on sticking to their hostage-taking tactics.

The Republicans who control Congress have long pledged not to let the Department of Homeland Security shut down on their watch.

But with its funding set to run dry in 17 days, and with the House and Senate still tied in knots over President Barack Obamas immigration policies, no signs are emerging of a solution to the DHS standoff and Republicans are ramping up their efforts to blame Democrats.

Senate GOP leaders waved surrender on one front Tuesday, acknowledging they wont be able to overcome the stubborn filibusters that Democrats have waged against Republican attempts to roll back Obamas immigration actions through the Homeland Security spending bill. Meanwhile, in a brief yet blistering interview, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) suggested that Senate Democrats deserved far more public blame for the impasse than they were getting.

The Republicans if there is a successful attack during a DHS shutdown we should build a number of coffins outside each Democratic office and say, You are responsible for these dead Americans, Kirk said Tuesday.

Progressive chasm

I often wonder about progressives. The term suggests one that is making progress. But, to where? I wonder whether progressives have read the Constitution. Do they really believe in it, beyond the obligatory yes? Highly questionable. I also wonder whether they understand basic economics. It seems clear they do not.

In his latest posting, Mr. Schweers suggests that taking money that I have earned from hard work to give to those that dont work is fair play. But he does not say what fair means. Does he know? Since the days of the Roman Empire and English kings, individuals and organizations have sought favor and special treatment from those that rule over them. He seems to think that the solution is to have rulers that will do what he wants rather than what the Constitution says.

And trickle down? The term was conjured by progressives to vilify those that actually wanted to create jobs. Or maybe he doesnt actually know how jobs are created. Hint. Its nothing the government does. He seems to want to increase taxes on corporations. Does he not know that corporations have never paid taxes, do not pay taxes, and never will pay taxes, no matter what the rate is? Raising them only hurts the middle class, making them more dependent on the government. Perhaps thats the intent.

There certainly is a chasm. But it is between those that want to increase control over individuals to do as they say and want (progressives), and those that believe in the Constitution.

It seems that Mr. Schweers wants more government control, but only if progressives are in charge and their special interests are receiving the benefits. Progressive conflict of interest? You bet.

OTTAWA - If Eve Adams becomes the federal Liberal candidate in the Toronto riding of Eglinton-Lawrence, local MPP Mike Colle says it will be over his dead body.

Colle, who's represented the riding provincially for the Liberals for 20 years, says the Conservative defector can't be allowed to simply parachute into a party and a constituency to which she has no ties.

"I just find the whole thing preposterous," Colle said in an interview Tuesday.

"I mean, that a Harper Tory from Mississauga all of a sudden is going to run here in the middle of Toronto with no connections and no awareness? You know, it's a real insult to the local Liberals in this community."

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau stunned many in his party on Monday when he announced that Adams, a lifelong Conservative who currently represents the riding of Mississauga-Brampton South, was crossing the floor to sit as a Liberal.

Adams said she hopes to carry the Liberal banner in a Toronto-area riding during the coming election, scheduled for October. She didn't identify the riding but is expected to seek the Liberal nomination in Eglinton-Lawrence, currently held by Finance Minister Joe Oliver.

Conservatives continued Tuesday to characterize Adams' defection as pure opportunism sparked by the governing party's decision late last month to bar her from running anywhere.
