RNC pays tribute to record-setting black Republicans

Story highlights As part of a Black History Month celebration, Republicans paid tribute to record-setting members of Congress It's part of the Republican National Committee's effort to build a more welcoming brand for the GOP

The committee held its third annual awards lunch at the Howard Theatre, a historic black landmark in Washington where the RNC and more than 400 attendees also paid tribute to the late Republican Sen. Edward Brooke, the first African-American popularly elected to the U.S. Senate, who died last month at the age of 95.

The event recognized Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the first black senator elected from the South since Reconstruction (in 2014 he was elected to the same seat he was appointed to in December 2012); Rep. Will Hurd, the first black Republican elected to Congress from Texas; and Rep. Mia Love of Utah, the first black Republican woman to serve in Congress.

Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets and a major GOP donor, helped introduce the three lawmakers.

"It's amazing to me that we're dealing with 'firsts' in this century," Johnson told CNN in an interview after the event. "There should be 'seconds, thirds and fourths,' and really the Republican Party is open to all."

While Republicans had a big year in 2014, Scott and Love still won largely with the support of white voters, while Hurd won with the support of white and Hispanic voters. In South Carolina, for example, Scott won 10% of the black vote, only slightly more than the other South Carolina senator, Lindsey Graham, who's white and brought in 6% of the black vote.

"We've got a ways to go," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said on stage Wednesday. "I know we're not going to carpet the world here in one or two years or one election cycle, but it's an improvement, and we always have to be improving as a party."

Black voter turnout in the midterm election this past November did reach into the double-digits in some states, like Florida (12%), Wisconsin (10%) and in Ohio, where Gov. John Kasich won re-election with 26% of the black vote.

For her part, Love told a story about a student who asked Love how she's able to be a black Republican woman living in a red state like Utah in "today's America."

I cant Islamise Nigeria, Buhari tells Christian leaders

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has told Christian clerics that he cannot Islamise the nation.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, Buhari said this during a meeting with Catholic bishops at the Pope John Paul Centre in Abuja.

Buhari said he would always put Nigeria first if elected into office, adding that when he ruled Nigeria between December 1983 and August 1985, he did not impose Islam on any individual.

He said having served in the military, he had been posted in several parts of the country and served alongside people of different religions and tribes.

He said the Peoples Democratic Party had succeeded in misrepresenting him to the Christian community because they could not sell their candidate

He said, I would like to solemnly declare that in spite of what our detractors say, I am not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been. In all my life, I have never supported extremism of any kind. Indeed, it is very unfortunate and I feel extremely sad that I have to give this type of assurance.

My background is in the army, and there is no doubt that the military is the most integrated pan-Nigerian institution. And even today, the military is one of the institutions that represents the pride of our nations possibilities in unity.

Compatriots from every corner of this country come together, work and live together, entrust their lives to each other and integrate their families. It is a military where many of my dearest friends, from all faiths and parts of the country, lost their lives defending the unity of our nation. That was the military I served in, and in that military it was impossible to be a bigot.

He said in governance, competence should always come before religion and that was why as head of state, he appointed 11 Christians as governors out of the 19 states.

He said religion comes from personal conviction and should never be used to gain political advantage.

Buharis wife donates N135m drugs to Adamawa IDPs

Hajiya Aishatu Buhari, wife of the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), on Wednesday donated drugs worth N135m to the Internally Displaced Persons camps in Adamawa State.

The wife of the presidential hopeful, who was in accompany with former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Pauline Tallen; wife of the governor of Rivers State, Mrs Judith Ameachi; wife of Nasarawa State governor and others, stormed Yola and visited two IDPs camps in Demare and Saint Theresa.

While presenting the donations at the IDPs camps, Hajiya Aishatu expressed regrets that thousands of Nigerians were displaced by Boko Haram insurgents, insisting that this was due to lack of good leadership in the country.

She said, It is unfortunate that Nigerians have been turned to refugees in their country, Nigerians are in dire need of change.

While we commiserate with you over the most unfortunate incident that befall you, which have also brought you here, I want to also stress the need for Nigerians to consider a candidate with integrity, devoid of sentiment.

It is our fervent prayer that the problem will be over for peace and normalcy to return to the land. Let us join hands to rebuild Nigeria that has been put in disarray by a weak leadership.

In another development, more than 800 children affected by Boko Haram insurgency in the northern parts of Adamawa have been placed under psycho-socio therapy by the state Universal Basic Education.

The Executive Chairman of ADSUBEB, Bello Furo, made this disclosure on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Yola.
