Medal of Valor: Officers saved lives in Boston, Wisconsin

Police officers and firefighters who helped save lives in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing and the shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin were honored with the Medal of Valor in a White House ceremony Wednesday.

Vice President Joe Biden draped the purple and yellow striped ribbons around the necks of 20 public safety officers, and presented medals to the families of two officers killed while responding to armed robberies. The two were off-duty at the time.

"You're a rare breed," Biden said. "You're all crazy. We love you for it. We need you. You are the best thing we have going for us."

Two people were dead on the ground outside the Sikh Temple in August 2012 when Lt. Brian Murphy and Officer Savan Lenda of the Oak Creek Police Department arrived on scene.

The suspected gunman was fleeing. Murphy pulled his gun, but the suspect fired first, hitting Murphy in his throat, legs and hand. When Lenda arrived on the scene and shot the suspect, the shooter crawled out of view and killed himself.

Lenda sent fellow officers to help Murphy, but the lieutenant waved them away and insisted they help those still inside the temple. The White House said the two officers' actions helped save the lives of many.

Boston and the surrounding area were in a state of panic in April 2013 because the suspects in the marathon bombing remained at large. The fateful night when Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev carjacked a vehicle before a dramatic confrontation with police is well known.

Less well known were the contributions of seven officers and firefighters from Watertown, Massachusetts, who received the medal from Biden.

Despite heavy weapon gunfire and reports the brothers were throwing explosives, officers and firefighters who responded helped protect the lives of those in uniform, the White House said. Tamerlan died as a result of the incident; Dzhokhar was apprehended 20 hours later.

Attorney General Eric Holder said this year's medals were particularly poignant, given that the country is struggling with "deep challenges" in the relationship between law enforcement agencies and their communities.

Investing a further 297m in regional businesses

Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is today (Thursday 12 February) announcing a further investment worth almost 300m to help local businesses grow.

As part of the sixth round of the Regional Growth Fund (RGF), 63 new projects and programmes across England will receive their share of 297m.

The funding will drive business expansion and is expected to unlock 1.5bn of extra private sector investment. It will also help create thousands of jobs.

Businesses across all industrial sectors will benefit, with 1.1bn being investing in manufacturing, 364m in automotives, 100m in aerospace and 104m for low carbon enterprises.

Commenting Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:

After decades of regional economies being neglected I set about investing directly in local businesses via the Regional Growth Fund. This investment has allowed regional businesses to be more ambitious than ever before and gone a long way in creating a stronger economy.

"A stronger economy means providing equal opportunity for everyone across the UK, rather than solely relying on the city of London to bolster UK business. The success of the RGF is proof that putting money in the hands of local businesses helps them flourish and creates opportunities for more people to work locally."

Since the RGF was launched in 2010, 2.85bn has now been invested in regional companies, helping them to expand and take on more staff.

Matt Wolfe joins widening Republican field for Council at-large

Matt Wolfe kicked-off his campaign for Republican City Council at-large, Wednesday, outside of the Center City office for the Philadelphia Gas Works.

Wolfe picked the location to criticize Councils unwillingness to hold a hearing on the sale of the utility to a private company an issue which has become the focus of many challengers.

I decided to do it here because the biggest failure in leadership by our City Council in this last term has been killing the deal to sell PGW...They killed the deal without any one of those 17 city councilmen having the backbone to introduce a bill, have a hearing or take a vote, he said. Thats not the message you want to send to companies who want to locate in Philadelphia.

Wolfe announced his bid on a cold day outside of the office, which is closed on Wednesdays, as several people wound through the crowd to slip their utility bills into a slot near the door. Wolfe was also critical of the company's hours at the Center City location - closed on weekends and on Wednesdays.

Wolfe, 58, of University City, runs his own law office and ran unsuccessfully against Councilman Ed Neilson in a special election last year. A former Deputy Attorney General, Wolfe also worked as Chief Counsel of the Department of Labor and Industry under Gov. Tom Ridge.

The Citys Republican Committee president Joseph DeFelice introduced Wolfe at the event, calling him a Rowhouse Republican" and The kind of guy who has the honesty and integrity to go to City Hall and shake things up for the right reasons.

The Republican Committee has not formally endorsed anyone.

Were going to allow the candidates to go out and circulate petitions," DeFelice said. "I think its good if you have eight or nine Republican candidates running around the city, knocking on doors, meeting voters and then afterwards, were gonna have a discussion about what were gonna do. We may endorse we may not endorse we may decide to let it be open.

Republican Councilmen Dennis OBrien and David Oh are the incumbents seeking reelection.
