China tightens grip on the Internet, but it didn't block all the tools to get around censorship

By Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai2015-02-01 03:47:17 UTC

In the last 10 days, China has been tightening its grip on the Internet, blocking several tools that allow users inside the country to escape and circumvent what's popularly known as the "Great Firewall of China."

Some popular Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs, were the latest victims of the sophisticated Chinese Internet censorship system, with several individuals and small businesses reportedly unable to use them in the last few days to connect to censored websites, or to use other blocked services like Gmail, Flickr or Twitter.

But not all hope is lost for Chinese users trying to get around the Great Firewall.

"It's wrong to report that all the VPNs have been shut down, and that all the circumvention tools have been shut down," Charlie Smith, one of the founders of the Internet censorship watchdog GreatFire, told Mashable.

In fact, the block has affected only popular, commercial VPNs such as Astrill, StrongVPN and Golden Frog.

Other alternative, less widespread tools, such as Psiphon, Lantern, Tor, and other VPN services, in fact, remain active.

Moreover, on Friday, two of the affected VPNs announced that they were able to fight back and restore their services, at least partially.

Golden Frog announced it in a blog post, while StrongVPN confirmed it to Mashable via email.

Yet, China's new crackdown on circumvention tools is almost unprecedented, or at least the worst since 2012, according to Bill Bishop, an American who lives in Beijing and is the editor of the influential Sinocism newsletter.

Be social media friendly

Be social media friendly

The upsurge in the number of social networks is not an excuse to throw caution to the wind. Here are ways to behave on social media:

Target a specific audience/network

Groups of people on a particular social media platform could come together to form a particular network. Target a particular network which would be beneficial to you and stick to it. Do not join a network you hope to gain nothing from. Messages and status updates should also be meant for the consumption of people in your network.

Avoid offensive content

Not all content are acceptable to everyone. While some people may derive pleasure in pornography and obscene pictures or vulgar languages, others might find them really offensive. Bear in mind that not only you and your ilk are on the said platform. If you have to post comments, let them be generally acceptable and devoid of offensive content.

Check frequency

You may control how frequent you post comments on your social media wall or profile, but if you are on a group network where you have to send broadcast messages, you have to check the frequency of such posts. For people who have activated notifications on the computers or phones, having the devices beep with each delivery of a message can be distracting. Only send messages when they are really important and cannot be postponed.

Check grammatical errors

Social media is meant for communication and this has to be effective. Not everyone loves to abbreviate words, so make sure you communicate in proper English to be better understood. Sentences should be well constructed and free of errors.
