APC slams DSS for ignoring ex-militants threats

Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The All Progressives Congress has berated the Department of State Service and the Nigeria Police Force for their silence over the threats of war by ex-militants should President Goodluck Jonathan lose next weeks election.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described the development as an indication of double standard and lack of fairness by the security agencies.

It noted that when Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, threatened that the party would form a parallel government if the elections were rigged, the DSS condemned the statement and issued a series of warnings.

The party, however, said it was funny that the same security agencies had now lost their voices because threats were being made by those close to Jonathan.

The statement read, When Governor Amaechi said soldiers had the right to protest if their welfare was not taken care of, the DSS was at its most efficient level, with its spokesperson threatening fire and brimstone and only stopping short of arresting the governor, despite his immunity.

When the same Amaechi said the APC will form a parallel government if the February 14 and 28 elections are rigged, the same DSS and the police sought to outdo one another with threats and condemnation of what they called inciting comments, even when Amaechis warning was conditional.

Now, the ex-militants have said President Jonathan must be re-elected or they will unleash violence on the country. In other words, it is immaterial whether or not he loses in a free and fair election. There is no clearer indication of impunity than the action of the ex-militants, who issued their threats in the Bayelsa Government House, with the governor of the state in attendance.

More than a week later, the DSS has been missing in action while the police, in what can pass as a most shocking reaction, said they are still studying the ex-militants comments. Even after a former Defence Minister, Gen.Theophilus Danjuma (retd.) called for the arrest of the ex-militants for their treasonable threats, and the ex-militants had the audacity to repeat the threats, the police still continued to study the threats. This is simply unbelievable.

The APC said the implication of the conspiracy of inaction by the DSS and the police was that, under the administration of Jonathan, there are different rules for different Nigerians, wondering how the security agencies could be trusted to provide a level playing field for all political parties before, during and after the forthcoming elections.

PDP, a threat to Osun peace APC

The All Progressives Congress in Osun State has described the jubilation by some supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state after the adoption of written addresses at the Election Petitions Tribunal as a threat to the security of the state.

Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said this at a press conference in Osogbo, the state capital, on Sunday.

He said that the PDP stage-managed the jubilation that its governorship candidate, Iyiola Omisore, had been declared winner of the August 9, 2014 election in order to give their supporters false hope and to lay the foundation for complaints and chaos after the tribunals judgment.

He asked the security agencies in the state to be on the alert in order to prevent any breakdown of law and order, which could plunge the state into anarchy.

Omisore had dragged Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the APC to the tribunal, asking the court to sack the governor and declare him (Omisore) winner of the poll.

The APC spokesperson said that Argbesola did not admit that he scored less that the number of votes credited to him by the Independent National Electoral Commission as Omisores counsel said at the tribunal.

He explained that the table prepared in Aregbesolas final address stated that if the results from the disputed polling units were cancelled, he would still have won with 234,791 lawful votes as against Omisores 219,189 votes.

Oyatomi said, So it was baffling what sort of brain wave could have incited supporters and leaders of the PDP into the streets, jubilating that Omisore had won his petition at the tribunal.

The APC is not disturbed by the fallacies of the PDP, but when these lies threaten the peace as they did during the silly jubilation of the PDP on the streets of Osogbo and elsewhere, it becomes a security threat which must be nipped in the bud.

This is why we want to alert the public to be on their guard always, not to allow the PDP create mayhem by spreading falsehood, capable of disturbing the peace.
