Fayemi submits APC convention report

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress convention planning committee, ex-governor Kayode Fayemi, has said the committee rose above the hostility of the federal government, to give the party a transparent presidential primary election.

This, he said, was made possible with the commitment of members of the committee and the corporation of delegates as well as all the aspirants.

Fayemi said this while presenting the committee report to the party chairman, Chief John Oyegun, at the party national headquarters, in Abuja, on Wednesday.

According to him, despite earlier misgivings, the choice of Lagos as venue for the event turned out to be a good one for the party in spite of all the challenges.

Fayemi said, We cannot be mentioning the hostility of the federal government in refusing us the use of the National Stadium as the complementary venue to the convention that we organised, we dont think such intolerance should be accommodated in the genius democracy.

He also gave some details about how the committee achieved the feat of giving the party the acclaimed transparent process.

The committee chairman said, We broke our works into eight sub-committee in all, we had electoral committee, security sub-committee, entertainment sub-committee, the accreditation sub-committee, media and publicity sub-committee, finance sub-committee, transport and accommodation sub-committee.

Those sub-committees worked tirelessly to ensure that we had a good convention which was mostly smooth in all respect.

The aspirants cooperated with us and the innovation we must commend the party for, which also contributed to the success of the convention, was the inclusion of representative of aspirant representatives. It is something we will recommend for every convention of the party, because that singular act saved us of a lot of rumours because the representative of the aspirants will have quenched the fire even before it gets to us and they were readily available to their own aspirants and also readily available to us and we were able to solve a lot of problems because of that.

He further explained that the involvement of representatives of the aspirants contributed, in no small measure, to the success of the event because they were part of the process from the beginning.

Tinubu pledges to support Buhari, Osinbajo

The National Leader, All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has pledged to support the candidacy of APC presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osibajo.

Tinubu, in a statement in Abuja, said though he was offered the position of the running mate by Buhari, he said he decided to maintain his position as a national leader.

He said, There came a time during the course of the events when our Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, offered me the Vice Presidential slot. Being a normal human being, I was deeply moved and honoured that he would consider me for the position. Being a patriot, I had to weigh my potential candidacy in all of its dimensions.

I have concluded that the interest of the party, our campaign and that of the nation are better served if I retain my position as the National leader of the APC, allowing me to be a bridge builder across all divides.

I sincerely commit myself to the rescue agenda of General Buhari and Professor Osinbajo.

I declare to you, I will work and dedicate myself so that our ticket succeeds and wins the 2015 election not for his good, not for my good, not even for the partys good but for the good of our nation.

NDP Defector Glenn Thibeault Won't Say If He Wants Mulcair Or Trudeau To Win In 2015

The defection of NDP MP Glenn Thibeault to the Ontario Liberals is raising some questions about Thomas Mulcair's prospects in a federal election that's now less than 10 months away.

And an interview Thibeault gave to CBC's Power & Politics Tuesday likely won't dissuade those convinced the MP now wants to run in a provincial byelection in Sudbury because things don't look bright for the federal NDP.

Thibeault, a former caucus chair and critic for consumer affairs, small business and tourism, backed Mulcair for NDP leader in 2012. And when Thibeault was nominated in September to run again federally, Mulcair was by his side.

However, the Toronto Star reported this week that relations between the two have been strained for months.

Thibeault told host CBC Evan Solomon that he hasn't been "seeing eye-to-eye" on a lot of things happening in the federal NDP, but wouldn't share specifics because of caucus confidentiality.

He did make reference to Mulcair's recent comments about reviving the long-gun registry, a divisive issue for many MPs in northern and rural communities.

"Some might say that you're looking ahead and realizing maybe the NDP's electoral fortunes don't look good on a federal level. You didn't go provincially for the NDP but you may hop into cabinet with Kathleen Wynne," Solomon said. "Was it about power expediency or was it about a sense that the NDP wasn't on a path that you thought would end up in power?"

Thibeault denied he was thinking about cabinet, saying he needs to win the byelection first. He did not, however, share thoughts on the electoral prospects of the federal NDP.

That's when Solomon asked a particularly interesting question about the 2015 election.

"The Ontario Liberals will support the federal Liberals in the next election, as you know. Kathleen Wynne is open about her support for Justin Trudeau," Solomon said. "Would you now want to see Justin Trudeau win the next election instead of Tom Mulcair?"

A large group of Sikhs in B.C. who have threatened to abandon Justin Trudeaus Liberals say their political protest is reaching Sikh communities across the country.

Its not (only) people going to the Ross Street Temple, or people living in the Vancouver area its people living across Canada, said Raj Bhela, general secretary of Vancouvers Ross Street Temple.

The Sikhs complaint is that the partys open riding nomination process is flawed.

According to Bhela, Sikhs from across B.C. and Canada have held meeting after meeting to discuss which party to support, and expect to announce their choice by the end of the week.

We are not Liberals, thats for sure, Bhela said.

The protest was sparked last week over the nomination of retired Canadian Army officer Harjit Singh Sajjan as the Liberals Vancouver South candidate, after prominent businessman Barj Dhahan withdrew from the nomination race.

At the time Dhahan withdrew he had signed up 4,000 voting members to support him in the race, while Sajjan had 1,000, said Kashmir Dhaliwal, past president of Vancouvers Khalsa Diwan Society.
