Dance music, house, techno and trance along with raves and all night (and day parties) became the all rage in several cities around the globe during the 1990s. However the biggest explosion of this kind of revelry seemed to occur on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

Ibiza unlike its other Balearic island neighbors, Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera, has a distinct party animal and boho vibe. Moreover it has long reigned as the party capital of the world as some of the best and most highly rated nightclubs are located here. Ibizas nightclubs are largely concentrated on two areas on this beautiful Island, around the capital of Ibiza town on the eastern shore and the resort town of Sant Antoni on the western shore.

So which are the clubs that rule the roost in Ibiza currently?

Space has been consistently voted the Best Club in the world by no less than the worlds top DJs. The club was initially built on a converted car park and it was subsequently redesigned so that today the worlds greatest DJs spin tunes from its famous Space decks from where the sound is transmitted throughout the club by way of a top of the line sound system. The clubs season opening and closing nights are like mini dance festivals that are known to attract more than 20,000 clubbers. Sunday nights though are the most popular nights at Space.

Club Pacha is a veritable institution on the Ibiza nightclub scene. This club was first established on a beach in Stiges in 1967 and it arrived in Ibiza in 1973. Since then it has spawned a global franchise that includes Pacha clubs in cities like New York, London and Buenos Aires. Pacha Ibiza stays open all year round. World renowned DJs like Peter Tong and David Morales have all enjoyed stints at Ibizas legendary Club Pacha.

Touted to be the biggest club in the world not only in Ibiza, Privilege has played host to many an international celebrity including P. Diddy, Madonna and Ibizas resident celebrity Jade Jagger. This gargantuan club which is topped with a 25 meter high ceiling is situated on the road between Sant Antoni and Ibiza Town. Privilege is adorned with tall windows that afford gorgeous vistas of the island and the club also houses a swimming pool. Due to its large size, the club can be changed around easily, thus Privilege promises a brand new experience to its patrons nightly.

This is for all you who have never been to Ibiza before. Here followsabrief explanation of the club scene and how it works.

So you've spent the day chilling at one of our amazing beach bars, you've watched the sunset, had a bite to eat and then moved on into town for some drinks, mingling and maybe a bit of a dance. From there the legendary Ibiza clubs are calling you fora big night with your favourite DJs.

These are the major clubs on the island of Ibiza:

In addition there are many smaller venues such as Bora Bora,Ocean Beach Ibiza, Underground, MOMA, Veto,Santos, KM5, Loand more.

The Monday to Sunday entertainment at each club is programmed by the clubs and outside promoters from many different countries around the world and tailored to suit the unique environment that is Ibiza's party scene.

This means that the music played in each club varies from night to night and promoter to promoter.

Please check out our party calendar for the most up to date information available with full DJ listings for every party. Also see Ibiza Partiesfor descriptions of each night.

Examples:

Cocoon promotes Monday nights at Amnesia and book mainly technoDJs to play (Sven Vth, Chris Liebing, etc) and put up their decorations and promote the party around town. On Thursdays Cream take over the club - they hang up a big Cream logo andbring in theirtrance and house djs, like Paul Van Dyk and Eddie Halliwell.

Just to confuse the issue all the major clubs have a back room or alternative area which usually plays different music to the Djs in the main room. In the case of Pacha and Space, there are numerous smaller back rooms playing a big cross selection of musical genres.

Students slow to test Ibizas replacement

Despite its prominent placement next to the Yale Center for British Art, Olea a Spanish and Mediterranean restaurant remains relatively unknown to Yale undergraduates two months after its opening.

Olea opened in late August at 39 High St., where local favorite Ibiza had operated for over 15 years. The restaurant closed in the Spring due to a dispute between the landlord and restaurant owners Sonia and Ignacio Blanco, the New Haven Independent reported in March. Although Olea is now operating under the same chef and much of the same staff as Ibiza, Manuel Romero chef of both Ibiza and Olea told the News in an August interview that he wanted to break away from traditional dishes.

According to an email from Olea management, most of the restaurants customers on weekdays are Yale students, faculty, staff or other affiliates. But most students interviewed were not even familiar with the new restaurant. Of 17 undergraduates surveyed, five were familiar with Ibiza while only three of those surveyed knew of Olea, and only one had eaten at Olea.

Despite Romeros proposed change in menu, student customers familiar with the change of names said they have not experienced a drastically different dining experience from Ibiza.

It will be the same type of cuisine and not groundbreaking like something in New York City, said Earl Lee 15, co-editor in chief of the Yale Epicurean, an undergraduate publication about food.

Han-ah Sumner 18 visited the restaurant last weekend with her parents and noted the high quality of the service and the complimentary dishes.

This past weekend, Olea offered a special Family Weekend menu tailored to those visiting campus and looking for a special meal.

Student foodies recognize Olea as filling a unique niche.

Olea, just as Ibiza was, is one of the best restaurants in New Haven within their price range, said Lucas Sin 15, co-editor of the Epicurean along with Lee. The food is well executed and the profiles are unique to the establishment.

Lee echoed Sins sentiments but identified other finer dining experiences including Zinc, Heirloom and 116 Crown as potential competitors to Olea in the upcoming months. Other students mentioned Barcelona and Briq as rounding out the roster of restaurants appealing to the same audience by offering a high-end dining experience close to campus.
