Hillary Clinton Raises Record $2.1M At Jeffrey Katzenberg Co-Hosted Hollywood Fundraiser

Hillary Clinton tonight told a room full of Hollywood heavyweights that the midterm elections are very important to make sure the Democrats retain the Senate so they can move forward on important issues like immigration reform. What she also told the 60 or so guests in attendance is, to use some of the introductory remarks by co-chair Jeffrey Katzenberg, is the amazing drawing power of the former Secretary of State. A fact not lost on anyone as tonights event raised $2.1 million forDemocratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, a fundraising record.

The presumptive predominant 2016 Presidential candidate was the headliner at a Brentwood fundraiser co-hosted by big Democratic Party bundler Katzenberg. The DreamWorks Animation boss and his wife Marilyn were joined at event sponsored by the DSCCby fellow co-chairs and big donors Casey Wasserman and Laura Wasserman, Steven Spielbergand Kate Capshaw, Disney Studios chairmanAlan Hornand Cindy Harrell Horn, and Live Nation president and CEO Michael Rapino and Jolene Rapino. Katzenbergs political consigliere Andy Spahn and Jennifer Perry were also co-chairs. Although named on the invite that went out last week fortonights 6 PM starting event, Spielberg and Horn was not actually at the fundraiser. Big time Dem supporter Cindy Harrell Horn was as were the Rapinos and the Wassermans.Avengers director Joss Whedon was there, sources say. Also there was long time Democratic supporter Eva Longeria, Big Bang Theorys Jim Parsons and Cameron Diaz.

DSCC Chair Sen. Michael Bennet spoke first followed by the DWA boss who praised the success of the evening. Clinton then spoke and took questions from the paying audience.

Clinton herself didnt bring up her assumed Presidential run in two years tonight sources tell me but Hillarys return to the White House and the campaign trail was on the minds and lips of LA and DC powerhouses today. Earlier in the day at a Clinton headlined fundraising lunch in San Francisco, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the crowd that if the former First Lady does decide to run for President, she will win. An industry attendee at tonights event told me the person I saw tonight acted like and was treated like an anointed Presidential candidate. Clinton worked the room like her hat was already thrown into the ring, he added.

Californias senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer were both supposed to be attendance with their former Senate colleague. However while the latter was there , the former was not. Boxer was also at the Ready For Hillary Super PAC fundraiser September 21 the Pacific Palisades home ofHomeland producer Howard Gordon and his wife Cami that raised cash for a Clinton 2016 campaign.Though she has been to LA for speaking and charity events since leaving the State Department last year, tonights fundraiser isClintons first direct cash-seeking eventoutside of a stop last October for her longtime pal, former DNC chair and now Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

With top tickets for tonights dinner, reception and a photo with Clinton going for $32,400, the fundraiser for the Grassroots Victory Project 2014 was held at the upmarket Tavern restaurant on San Vicente Blvd, as Deadline revealed earlier this month. Attendees were also able to give $211,200 to Grassroots directly. While the ever present gaggle of protesters were there and Clintons visit to LA came with a very apparent security force, it did not have the sweeping Service Service road closures causingtraffic chaoslikePresidentObamas trip 10 days ago fora fundraiser at the home of Gwyneth Paltrow.

In line with the recent visits by Vice President Joe Biden and Obama, Clintons hoovering up of Hollywood dough comes midway through a multi-state foray withthe Congressional midterm elections looming. Before arriving in LA this afternoon, Clinton was in San Francisco earlier today and raised $1.4 million for the DCCC. Tomorrow she is in Colorado tomorrow and Massachusetts on Friday among other stops in the tried-and-true pattern of a candidate looking to gather chits to cash in later. Speaking of cash, the financial support of Katzenberg and other Hollywood deep pockets is another fundamental component of any Clinton 2016 run support the ex-NY Senator clearly has at this point.

Among her previous stops on the campaign trail over the pastmonth, Clinton stumped for Kentucky Senate hopeful Alison Lundergan Grimes last week. The Grimes campaign has special significance for the primary host of tonights event as Katzenberg has made unseating Senate Minority Leader and Kentuckys current senior senatorMitch McConnell his primary aim of this years midterms. To that end, the DWA CEO has contributed the maximum allowed to the current Bluegrass state Secretary of States coffers and has introduced Grimesto other big Tinseltown donors at fundraisers in both LA and NYC.

Clinton of course needs no introduction.

Hillary Clinton Hollywood Fundraiser Nets $2.1M for Democrats

Former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton's ultra-elite Hollywood fundraiser at Tavern restaurant in Brentwood on Monday raised $2.1 million for Democrats in tight Senate races, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Tickets for the dinner, co-hosted by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg, sold for $32,400 per person, but donors also were given the option of contributing up to $211,200 to the Grassroots Victory Project 2014, a joint fundraising committee authorized by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to benefit candidates around the country, making the fundraiser the largest of the season.

In April, aU.S. Supreme Court decision struck down campaign contribution limits that prevented donors from giving more than $123,200 to candidates, political party committees and political action committees per two-year election cycle. The decision also nixed limits on contributions to parties and PACs, making way for super-sized joint fundraising committees, like the Grassroots Victory Project.

According to campaign finance reports, Grassroots raised $1.3 million during the July through September reporting period, with Boston-based investor Ian Simmons accounting for the single largest donation of $150,000. Now, with Hollywood's deep pockets focused on the group, expect the names of industry bigwigs to turn up in the next filing.

An invitation to the Clinton event, obtained by THR, singled out a number of Hollywood favorites as beneficiaries. They included Kentucky candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes, Georgia candidate Michelle Nunn, West Virginia candidate Natalie Tennant, Colorado Sen. Mark Udall, Alaska Sen. Mark Begich, Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor and North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan.

The event's lengthy list of co-chairs included Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn and wife Cindy, Casey and Laura Wasserman, and LiveNation CEO Michael Rapino and wife Jolene Blalock. Also attending the event were Cameron Diaz, Eva Longoria and Jim Parsons.

Katzenberg introduced Clinton to a crowd of about 60 people at Tavern, where the former secretary of state talked about the importance of keeping a Democratic majority in the Senate to implement immigration reform and other key Obama initiatives. Although Clinton did not specifically talk about whether or not she would seek election in 2016, people in the room treated her like she was already running, according to one source.

Monica Lewinsky joins Twitter: Why that's bad news for Hillary Clinton 2016 (+video)

With three simple words, Monica Lewinsky has broken her silence, re-entered public life, launched a campaign against cyber-bullying - and, quite possibly, thrown a major wrench in Hillary Clinton's purported plans to run for the presidency in 2016.

The former White House intern who had an affair with President Clinton in 1998 joined Twitter Monday with this simple tweet:

That tweet came ahead of Lewinsky's first public speech in 13 years, a Forbes Under 30 Summit in which she spoke about cyber-bullying in a speech entitled, "Monica Lewinsky and the Internet's Reputation Shredder."

I was Patient Zero, Lewinsky said in her speech. The first person to have their reputation completely destroyed worldwide via the Internet.

She said that the death of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, whose college roommate streamed video of him kissing another male student, inspired her to share her own story of Internet shaming and how the Clinton affair scandal nearly ruined her life. In an earlier essay, Lewinsky wrote, Perhaps by sharing my story, I reasoned, I might be able to help others in their darkest moments of humiliation."

Lewinsky's re-re-entry into public life (she's "broken her silence" several times before, as the Washington Post points out, first in a 1999 tell-all book, then an interview with Barbara Walters in 2000, and finally a Vanity Fair essay in 2014, all before joining Twitter) is a smart move for the former intern whose name has become synonymous with sexual scandal.

Why? On Twitter, Lewinsky can communicate with the public on her own terms, at her own discretion - there's no editor, handler, or network executive who may spin her story to suit their objectives.

And by describing herself as 'patient zero,' Lewinsky re-frames her role in the well-known scandal narrative from "the other woman" to a victim of cyber-bullying, simultaneously earning her both credibility on the public stage as well as compassion - both of which she's struggled to achieve in the past.

So far, it's paying off: Lewinsky received a standing ovation for her speech at the Forbes Under 30 Summit - and she's already got more than 20,000 followers on Twitter.

One person unlikely to be following Lewinsky on Twitter: Hillary Clinton.

Agents questioned, Askar takes the Fifth in Trombetta hearing

PITTSBURGH -- An evidence suppression hearing for Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School founder Nick Trombetta will stretch into November after another day of arguments Monday was more notable for who did not testify than for who did.

Beaver County solicitor Joe Askar, who also represents the Rochester-based National Network of Digital Schools, invoked his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination and refused to testify. Askar was subpoenaed by Trombettas defense team in their effort to get recorded conversations with attorneys, including him, tossed out by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Joy Flowers Conti.

Trombetta -- who faces 11 federal charges -- is claiming that the FBI violated his attorney-client privilege by recording discussions with Askar, former PA Cyber attorney Timothy Barry, and Ralph Monico and Leo Daly, attorneys who also represented NNDS. A Sept. 30 hearing was continued until Monday.

Mr. Askar has neither committed nor been charged with any crime. Nor will he be. As the U.S. Supreme Court has said, the privilege is available not only to protect the guilty, but also the innocent: We have emphasized that one of the Fifth Amendments basic functions is to protect innocent men, who otherwise might be ensnared by ambiguous circumstances, Bruce Teitelbaum, Askars attorney, said in a statement.

The ambiguities inherent in this complex matter and the possibility of misunderstanding compelled me, out of caution, to advise Mr. Askar to invoke his privilege, Teitelbaum said.

Barry was called to the stand by defense attorney Adam Hoffinger later in the day, but was excused after a lengthy off-the-record sidebar involving his attorney, Trombettas lawyers and prosecutors. Hoffinger said Barry would be recalled when the hearing continues next month.

Trombetta attorney Robert Salerno quizzed FBI agent Samantha Bell, the lead investigator, on synopses of calls monitored by agents, instructions to agents on recording calls and minimization, the FBIs name for when agents stop listening to calls that are irrelevant or might be protected by attorney-client privilege.

After Barry was excused, FBI agent Paul Allen took the stand and was questioned by Hoffinger on a June 2012 synopsis of a recorded call on which he noted that Trombetta would be talking to his attorney.

Hoffinger wondered how agents could know when to stop recording privileged communications if they truly did not know whether Trombetta had a personal attorney. Allen said he did not exactly remember, but testified that he might have simply written the note to be cautious.

Im not sure why I used the personal pronoun his, Allen said. I didnt mean anything by it.
