OPINION: You might have a lasting effect by voting Libertarian

When I am out and about, I hear a very frequent refrain about local politics. I dont care for either of them. Well, in some races, you have another choice.

You might have a lasting effect by voting Libertarian. In the races for governor and for senate, polls show very tight races. Pundits are saying that any significant vote for the Libertarian candidate could force the two major candidates into runoffs. One of the majors will wind up winning, but they will know that you are not satisfied with their politics!

There is a public service race with no Democrat. Incumbent Doug Everett is facing Libertarian John Monds. In this race, the Georgia Libertarian Party has a chance of collecting a significant vote total. Several other races have Libertarian candidates. So you are not locked in to the Democrats or Republicans.

The three candidates for governor include the incumbent Republican Nathan Deal, closely pursued by former presidents grandson Jason Carter, and the Libertarian Andrew T. Hunt. The senate race is currently polled as a draw between David Purdue, a cousin of our former governor, and Michelle Nunn, daughter of former senator Sam Nunn who has chosen not to use her married name. They are opposed by Libertarian Amanda Swafford. Another contested race is for insurance commissioner in which the incumbent Republican Ralph Hudgens of Madison County who is facing Democrat Elizabeth Johnson and Libertarian Edward T. Metzs. In each race, you have an option of writing in a candidate.

The 9th district congressional race includes the incumbent Republican Doug Collins and Democrat David Vogel from Madison County. There are a couple of state Constitutional Amendments on the ballot that no one seems to be interested in.

There is one contested Madison County race between incumbent District 5 commissioner Jim Escoe, a Republican, and Democrat Clyde Verhine.

So, if you feel that one of the major candidates can effectively support your opinions, by all means vote for that candidate. But, if you are among those who are convinced that neither of them is a suitable representative of your opinions, you can express your displeasure by voting for a Libertarian or writing in someone you think will better support your opinion.

No vote is wasted. Even a vote for someone who obviously has no chance of winning will at least make your opinion known.

Over 1000 APC officials, members in Abia defect to PDP

Over 1,000 officials and members of the opposition All Progressives Congressin Abia State, yesterday defected to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.

Some of the returnees include former Administrative Secretary of APC in the state, Chief Erondu Erondu; former Youth Leader, Vin Ume, former council chairman, women leaders among other chieftains .

Speaking when he led the decampees to the PDP secretariat in Umuhaia, an ex-APC chief, Egwuatu Egbulefu, noted that the in-fighting, deceit, and undemocratic manner in which APC is run leaves much to be desired, hence their decision to return to PDP.

He said,We unfortunately allowed ourselves to believe that we were working with progressives who had good plans and provisions for the people, but little did we know that we had joined a bandwagon of aggrieved politicians looking for a common platform to unburden their grief and self over-estimation.

He described APC as a party of sad, aggrieved and selfish persons who competed to outdo and undo each other, adding that going by the level of mischief appropriated by the leadership of APC it will be sinful for progressives to stay back with them in order to always lie against government to gain self recognition and pride.

The former APC chief pledged on behalf of other decampees, their loyalty to the leadership of PDP while appealing to others still wasting their useful time in APC to return home because PDP is better now than we left it.

He however, pleaded that waiver be granted to the returnees wishing to vie for any elective position in the 2015 polls, as well as fixing some of them with wealth of experiences to deserving positions in the PDP hierarchy.

John Elway backs Cory Gardner in Colorado as progressives target Denver Broncos fans

DENVER Former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway is supporting Republican Rep. Cory Gardners Senate bid, but progressives opposing the congressman are hoping to win over some of the Broncos faithful.

ProgressNow Colorado hired a prop plane to fly an anti-Gardner message over Denver before Thursday nights home game against the San Diego Chargers. Activists also plan to hand out anti-Gardner materials during the game outside Sports Authority Field, according to a Thursday press release.

The last six polls show Mr. Gardner leading in his bid to unseat Democratic Sen. Mark Udall. A USA Today/Suffolk University poll released Wednesday found the Republican ahead by 46 to 37 percent. The statistics website FiveThirtyEight gives Mr. Gardner an 80 percent chance of winning the seat in Wednesdays update.

Mr. Elway, the Hall of Famer who now serves as Denver Broncos vice president of football operations, recently contributed $5,000 to Mr. Gardners Senate campaign, according to federal campaign-finance records.

ProgressNows angle is to compare Mr. Gardner to San Diego linebacker Manti Teo, who was the victim of a highly publicized online hoax in college involving a fake girlfriend. The slang term for creating a false online identity in order to lure someone into a romantic relationship is catfishing.

Colorado currently has our own catfishing scandal. U.S. Senate candidate Cory Gardner has created a fake persona of his own with the goal of duping Colorado voters into a romance at the ballot box, said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms in a statement.

The banner being flown says, Cory Gardner is Catfishing Colorado. In response, the Denver Posts Lynn Bartels quipped, In other words, Democrats are worried about all those polls showing Gardner ahead of Udall.

This isnt the first time football has made an appearance in the Colorado Senate race. The website Deadspin was forced to retract and apologize for a story last week that accused Mr. Gardner of lying about playing high school football. It turns out Mr. Gardner played for Yuma High School for three years.

Presidential bid: Falana knocks Buhari for taking N27.5m loan

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, has criticised the All Progressives Congress presidential aspirant, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for obtaining a loan of N27.5m to procure his partys expression of interest and nomination form for the 2015 presidential election.

He made this remark on Thursday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Paramount FM Chapel Press Week.

He noted that the action of the former head of state was indefensible, stressing that it amounted to monetisation of politics.

He said, It is indefensible for Gen. Buhari to have obtained a loan facility of N27.5m just to obtain a form of intent to contest in the presidential election in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress.

Is he going to obtain another loan during his campaign, because in Nigeria, it costs billions of naira to run a presidential campaign?

Falana, who was the guest lecturer at the event, spoke on the topic: Current Security Challenges: Implication for 2015 Elections.

On the coverage of the 2015 election, the legal luminary advised journalists not to give undue advantage to any candidate, but should give all of them equal coverage, devoid of ethnic or religious colouration.

He also advised journalists to be wary of phony politicians who would want to play to the gallery, but should focus on issues.

He said, Journalists must show more than a passing interest on how those aspirants want to manage the economy. The government must address mass illiteracy, corruption and poverty.
