Counter-protest begins in Hong Kong as pro-democracy demonstration dwindles

HONG KONG, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- As Hong Kong's pro-democracy demonstrators struggle to maintain their week-long protest, they were met Friday with a counter-protest.

Opponents of the pro-democracy movement removed barricades and tents erected by the protesters over the past week, some of whom have been camped on the streets and outside government buildings.

It is unclear whether the counter-protest was sanctioned by Beijing or was an organic response to the pro-democracy demonstration.

Protesters began their demonstration on Sept. 26, calling for the resignation of Hong Kong's chief executive, Leung Chun-ying, and for elections to determine his successor.

Although the "Umbrella Revolution" surged in its first days, the number of protesters has since dwindled due to heavy rain, Leung's refusal to resign, and an offer by the chief executive to meet with demonstrators.

The People's Daily newspaper, considered a mouthpiece of the Chinese government, published a front-page editorial on Friday reiterating its support for Leung and asserting that the pro-democracy movement was "doomed to failure."

'Democracy Dogs' add bite to Hong Kong protests

Dogs are adding an additional bite to the ongoing pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong as the demonstrators blocking the central part of the city for about a week brought their pets into the agitation fondly calling them democracy dogs.

The dogs added colour and banter to otherwise tense week-long Occupy Central agitation by thousands of youth and students which was marred by confrontation with police who used pepper spray and tear gas.

One of the democracy dogs, as fellow protesters affectionately called them, was chihuahua Snowy, who accompanied her owner, 29-year-old public relations worker Jan Pang, to the protests in Central.

French bulldog Meimei had goggles and a mask with herjust in case", said owner Alex Holm. Holm said he couldnt vouch for Meimeis precisepolitical views, but she (is) definitely pro-democracy, Hong Kong based South China Morning Post reported.

Democracy dogs also made an appearance in Mong Kok, drawing large crowds hoping for a photo opportunity. Im sure it wont bite, one parent was heard telling to her child.

It will only bite Leung Chun-ying, he said, referring to Hong Kongs pro-Beijing Chief Executive who resisted calls by protesters to resign.

Back to the polls in Bulgaria

Sofia, Bulgaria - Bulgarians head to the polls on Sunday to elect what will betheir fifth government in just 18 months. If predictions pan out, the election will bring to power an uncertain coalition government led by a former prime minister whose toppling in February 2013 started the whole cycle.

Many say the situation in Bulgaria, the EU's poorest nation, has only worsened since then.

In February 2013, Bulgaria's centre-right government of Boiko Borisov was forced to resign following mass protests over rising utility costs, austerity measures, and accusations of governmental mismanagement. Since then, three governments have come and gone, victims of instability and a vocal and unhappy population.

The elections on Sunday are meant to draw to a close the political uncertainty, but it is unclear if they will.

"These current elections are crucial for Bulgaria," says Kancho Stoychev, an analyst with pollster Gallup International.

"Political reform is needed. People are tired, they are disgusted by all of the political parties and there are no 'new hopes' on the horizon to galvanise them," he adds.

In 2013, nightly anti-government protests ran for more than 150 days straight, the longest in the country since the fall of communism 25 years ago.

The political instability has been compounded in recent months by economic failures that included runs on two of Bulgaria's largest banks.
