Almost a generation has passed since Nicky Haslam, societys pre-eminent observer of style, compiled a list of dos and donts in a newspaper column that has helped the uninitiated through the minefield of fashion and good taste.
His list became an essential guide for those who wished to convince the world they were not only cultured, but blessed with fine-tuned sophistication. It was also very funny.
But times change. The internet age has produced a new set of social rules. Not even the U and non-U advice of the late Nancy Mitford survives entirely intact.
So to mark this new era, we asked society decorator Haslam, who at 74 is surely living proof that while fashions change, style doesnt, to come up with a new list of vulgar things, from figures of speech to fads and obsessions, we should all avoid.
