Poll: Bill Clinton Helps Candidates, Others Dont

Hillary Clinton is due to embark on a campaign tour to boost Democrats, but a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Annenberg survey finds its her husband who can give candidates the biggest boost.

Former President Bill Clinton scored the best among eight prominent figures when registered voters were asked if a campaign endorsement would help or hurt a candidate.

An endorsement from Mr. Clinton would make 38% of people look at the candidate more favorably, compared to 24% who would take a less favorable view. No other politician in the survey had a net positive more than one percentage point, the mark earned by Mrs. Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama.

President Barack Obama, 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and GOP Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky all would leave a more negative view of their endorsee among registered voters.

But with campaigns targeting base voters, the partisan numbers may be more instructive than the universe of registered voters. Among Democrats, 70% say an endorsement from Mr. Clinton would leave a more favorable view of a candidate. Mrs. Clintons score was 65%, Mr. Obamas 60% and Mrs. Obamas 56%.

For Republicans, the best campaign surrogate is Mr. Romney at 59%. Less than a third of Republicans said that Messrs. Christie, Paul and Cruz would leave a positive view of whoever they endorse the latest evidence of the split nature of the GOP base.

Only Mr. Clinton and Mr. Paul would give a boost to candidates from independent voters, the poll found.

The survey of 1,181 registered voters was conducted Sept. 26 through Oct. 2 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.42 percentage points. It was conducted in coordination with the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

Meet the Hosts

Hillary Clinton is beatingChris Christie in his backyard.

The former secretary of state and U.S. senator from New York leads Christieby 50 percent to 40 percent in a hypothetical 2016 matchup in his home state, according to a Quinnipiac poll released this morning.

"The adopted daughter next door whips the native son when it comes to presidential politics in New Jersey," Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement.

Yes, we're more than two years from that election and there's a lot we don't know, including whether Clinton or Christie will run.

What this poll showsis thatNew Jersey is fundamentally a Democratic bastion, Christie's political success notwithstanding. New Jersey has voted Democratic for president in six consecutive elections, including by 18 points in 2012. Christie drew plauditsfor his handling of the state's recovery from superstorm Sandy in 2012, though his dominance in last year's election owed partly to the weakness of his little-known Democratic opponent, Barbara Buono, who's no Hillary Clinton.

And governors don't necessarily replicate their statewide political success in presidential elections, which are contested over a different matrix of issues. Governors do not deliver their home states. Recall that Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, was trounced there in the 2012 election.

New Jersey voters are about evenly divided on Christie's nearly five-year tenure as governor, with 46 percent of New Jersey voters approving and 45 percent disapproving of his job performance, the Quinnipiac survey showed.

Still, Christie's success in New Jersey is key to hisappeal as a national Republican candidate and keeps him in the conversation about the 2016 presidential election.

Man Denied Fifth Amendment While In Court Wearing Anti-Police Shirt, Still Won His Case (Video)

A citizen journalist in Broward County, Florida decided to film police shutting down a peaceful gathering early one morning, and after strangely being pulled over minutes later for what officers said was a traffic offense, he appeared in court to discuss his ticket. Now, his courtroom appearance has gone viral as many say he was denied basic constitutional rights.

Michael Burns says in his video description on LiveLeak that he witnessed around 10 people being kicked off of public property around 1:30 a.m. last week and decided to break out his camera to record it. An officer told Burns to stop filming and leave, and he refused, but when the situation seemed to die down, he decided to leave on his own. As he was pulling away from the area, one of the cops got in his vehicle and started to follow him. Right as he was turning around to go home, the cop put his lights on, and to Burns surprise, it was the same officer who had asked him to leave earlier.

A short time later, six more police cars showed up as Burns was informed that he was being pulled over because his license plate was partially obstructed. Burns believes, however, that he was pulled over because the officer was angry that he refused to stop filming the earlier incident. Burns says he refused to answer any of the officers questions and told him that he would see him in court.

On court day, Burns decided to wear his Fuck the Police shirt, and when told the judge that he wished to invoke his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent, the judge denied his request. Still, as Burns notes, he won the case against the multiple officers in the room.

Take a look at the courtroom video below.
