We are happy Obi left APGA -Umeh

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Umeh, has said the party lost nothing over the defection of former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Speaking to journalists at a rally in Asaba on Wednesday where Dr. Anthony Azuya, a House of Representatives candidate, led defectors from the All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party to APGA, Umeh said as Obi left the party, more people were joining the party.

You can see that as Obi left the party yesterday, about 7,000 people have joined the party today. It is like a church. As some people are leaving, many more people are coming in.

If there is any problem (with the party), people will not be trooping to APGA. We are happy that Obi left, he said.

The APGA National Chairman however said APGA was unwavering in its support for the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan in next years election.

Apart from the presidential election, APGA will field candidates in all the elections in 2015, Umeh said.

He warned Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission to allow the peoples votes count in the October 25 local government election in the state.

Azuya, who is the candidate of APGA for Oshimili/Aniocha Federal Constituency in the 2015 House of Reps election, said the APGA project in Delta State was to change lives, inspire and motivate youths to make them employable.

He promised not to fail the people if they support his candidacy.

APC may alter mode of presidential primaries

Buhari, Abubakar and Kwankwaso

The All Progressives Congress may alter the mode for its presidential primaries if feelers from the party hierarchy are anything to go by.

It was learnt in Abuja, on Thursday, that high ranking party members loyal to some of the presidential aspirants were bringing their influence to bear in the struggle to ensure that whatever mode was finally agreed upon, would be favourable to the aspirant of their choice.

The APC had earlier agreed on the modified direct primaries but supporters of one of the aspirants rejected it, saying it was not captured in the partys constitution.

Specifically, supporters of Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari had argued that the party constitution stipulated that the nomination of candidates shall be through direct or indirect primary election.

This, they said, should be the mode in an event the consensus arrangement they were pushing for did not sail through.

Supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the other hand, argued that the direct or indirect primaries entailed voting by party members. This, they argued, should be adhered to.

The APC national working committee saddled with the responsibility of working out the modalities for the primaries met in Abuja, on Thursday.

It was gathered that the committee would submit its report to the partys leaders who in turn would meet with aspirants before the National Executive Committee for final approval.

Although the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, confirmed that the NWC scheduled a meeting for 2pm. He said, It has been rescheduled for 5pm. He gave no further details.

$9.3m scandal: FG must come clean, APC insists

National Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress, Lai Mohammed | credits: File copy

The All Progressives Congress has said that Asari Dokubos denial of involvement in the $9.3m cash-for-arms scandal carries no weight until the Federal Government comes clean on the identities of Nigerians on the jet.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said this in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday.

He explained that the partys reaction came against the backdrop of a story published by http://www.africaneagle.com and http://www.nairaland.com, saying Asari Dokubo was one of the Nigerians aboard the jet that carried the money to South Africa.

Mohammed said, To the best of our knowledge that report has not been denied over 24 hours later. We, therefore, contend that Asari Dokubos denial of his involvement carries no weight until the government, which has claimed ownership of the funds, tells Nigerians who the two Nigerian citizens who were in the plane with an Israeli are.

We have no business with Asari Dokubo. He can blab all he likes. We have no reason to disbelieve a widely-circulated published report that named him as one of those on the plane.

If he now says he was not on the plane, let the government come out and tell Nigerians who and who were on it, it said.

The APC wondered why the government has refused, for over three weeks now, to identify the Nigerians who flew on the plane that ferried the money to South Africa, especially after the Israeli, who was also on the plane, had been named.

According to the APC, identifying the Nigerians will help to unravel the circumstances surrounding the whole scandal.

He said it would be interesting to know if the Nigerians were security officials, officials from the office of the NSA who issued the end-user certificate for the transaction or ordinary Nigerians.
