Rahm Emanuel On Why Hes Endorsing Hillary Clinton Over Biden in 2016

May 9, 2014 9:14am

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who ultimately backed President Obama in 2008 despite his close ties to the Clinton family, has no reservations for the 2016 cycle.

The former adviser to President Bill Clinton and former chief of staff to President Obama will be headlining two fundraisers in early June for Ready for Hillary, the grassroots Super PAC urging Hillary Clinton to run for president announced today.

While Emanuel has publicly said he would support Clinton if she runs, this will be his first time officially fund-raising on her behalf.

In 2008, then-Congressman Emanuel, D-Ill., embarrassingly refrained from endorsing either of his close friends, Obama or Clinton, until nearly the end of the primary, eventually backing Obama just three days before Clinton suspended her campaign.

Emanuel is much more confident about where his allegiance lies for 2016. When asked about his other friend Vice President Biden as a potential presidential candidate, Emanuel gave reasons why Clinton was his top pick.

Joes a good friend, personally. Hes obviously worthy of being considered because hes a great vice president, a great senator, has something to offer. I just indicate where I stand on that, Emanuel said in an interview with ABC News Jim Avila for the ABC-Yahoo digital video series Power Players.

Theres no doubt the vice president has been a tremendous vice president and has a great amount of experience. In this case, so does the former secretary of state, senator, and first lady, Emanuel added, referring to his support for Hillary Clinton.

Vice President Biden has previously said Hillary Clintons running would not affect his own decision to run.

For a whole host of reasons, Emanuel said he believes Clinton will win if she does run, citing demographic trends and her incredible Chicago-area work ethic.

Lewinsky fears 'next wave of paparazzi' if Hillary Clinton runs

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- Monica Lewinsky writes that she's concerned a second Hillary Clinton bid for the White House would thrust her back into the spotlight.

"When I hear of Hillary's prospective candidacy, I cannot help but fear the next wave of paparazzi," she said in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair.

"Like many Americans, I've been thinking about Hillary Clinton. What might happen, I've wondered, if she does run in 2016. And what if she wins -- and then wins a second term?" she said.

"But when I think about these matters, there's a dimension at play for me other than just the fact that we might finally have a women in the White House," said Lewinsky.

'Burn the beret...'

Her comments were taken from the full article that's due out on Thursday. It's the first time she's written about her affair with Bill Clinton, who was impeached over the resulting scandal. The Senate acquitted him of all charges.

In excerpts released on Tuesday, Lewinsky, now 40, said the sexual relationship with Clinton while working as an intern in the mid-1990s was consensual and it was time to move on.

"It's time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress," she wrote, noting that she "deeply" regretted what occurred.

"Sure, my boss took advantage of me, but I will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship. Any 'abuse' came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position," Lewinsky wrote.

Mayor Emanuel joins group urging Hillary Clinton presidency

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is officially joining the movement to draft Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

10:11 a.m. CDT, May 9, 2014

Emanuel, who also served in the U.S. House of Representatives, will headline two fundraisers for the group in June. His support comes less than a week after Virginia Senator Tim Kaine also backed the effort.

The group - a super PAC that voluntarily caps donations at $25,000 - is not officially affiliated with Clinton, who says she will decide whether to pursue the White House after November's congressional elections. But it boasts the backing of numerous Democratic officials and donors.

Clinton is the overwhelming favorite to be the Democratic nominee in 2016 if she chooses to run again. Preliminary polling shows her leading all other potential White House aspirants after she served for four years as Secretary of State under Obama.

The former First Lady and New York senator lost the hard-fought 2008 nomination battle to then-Illinois Senator Obama, and has since openly spoken about the difficulties of presidential campaigns.

The June release of Clinton's memoir of her time at the State Department is expected to kick off a more intense national discussion of her presidential prospects.
