NDP and Liberals accusing each other of not telling the truth about three Ontario job-relief funds

With much of Ontarios economy struggling, the NDP and Liberals are accusing each other of not telling the truth about the fate of three job-relief funds for the hardest-hit areas of the province.

The dust-up mirrors the early tenor of the campaign, with the ruling Liberals targeting their first election ad not at Tim Hudaks Tories, but at Andrea Horwaths New Democrats.

The Grits threw the first punch, claiming the New Democrats would wipe out three funds serving Northern, Eastern and Southwestern Ontario. The NDP would kill proven job-creation programs like the Eastern Ontario Development Fund, Southwestern Ontario Development Fund and Northern Ontario Heritage Corporation, the Liberals said in a statement.

That campaign claim is false, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said Monday.

We never said that . . . I think (the Liberal claim) is irresponsible, Horwath said from Northern Ontario, where she was campaigning.

Under Liberal rule, the province has lost 300,000 manufacturing jobs and unemployment rates remain so high, Premier Kathleen Wynne will do anything to distract voters from her own sorry record, Horwath said.

Theyre just trying to throw mud. They have a dismal record, she said.

The Liberals calling the NDPs plan bogus point to statements made by Horwath when she said an NDP government would give $250-million worth of tax credits to companies that create jobs or invest in their business. That loss of revenue would be offset by cutting from nine economic-development programs that overlap.

That has the Liberal economic development minister, Eric Hoskins, accusing Horwath of cutting successful job programs for unproven tax credits.

How the accidental hard-hat strategy paid off for B.C. Liberals

One year ago, the B.C. Liberals pulled off a miracle with an election victory that few saw coming. Premier Christy Clarks disciplined message around job creation, delivered in her signature hard hat throughout the 28-day campaign, was a strategic coup that caught the overconfident New Democrats off guard.

But as much as the Liberals ran a strong campaign, Ms. Clark should take a moment as she marks the anniversary of that win on Tuesday to say thanks for small details.

It really was an accidental strategy on the hard hats, the Liberals 2013 campaign director, Mike McDonald, said in a recent interview.

The Liberals planned to launch their campaign by sending Ms. Clark to tour natural gas plants in the northeast corner of the province. The concept was for her to deliver a message mostly to urban voters about her ambitions for a liquefied natural gas industry.

We were lining up tour events and it became apparent to us it would be easier for the Premier to go to those events with her own [safety] gear. We went as far as getting a little Christy patch sewn on her full-length coveralls, we got them sized up properly so she was completely comfortable in them.

After the first week of the campaign, it seemed so natural, we kept going with it.

The result was a memorable image that stuck with voters: Ms. Clark had an upbeat message about jobs. In contrast, New Democrat Leader Adrian Dix spent the campaign in a suit and tie, laying out a detailed and cautious platform that studiously avoided overpromising anything to anyone.

Mr. McDonald says he always believed his party could win despite the huge lead that the New Democrats appeared to have going into the campaign. I didnt think we were dead. We had the wind in our sails.

In the days before the vote, however, many still doubted him. I was getting supportive calls from people saying, Dont worry no matter what happens, we still love you. He often had to play the role of cheerleader for Liberals who were convinced their cause was doomed.

Just hours before the polls closed, he sent out an e-mail to party members begging them not to give up. Dig deep. Phone and visit potential voters. Its full-on battle stations, he wrote.

College Commencement Speeches: Liberals Hate Diversity

Liberals are always preaching the values of diversity and inclusion. Regrettably, such platitudes are just rhetoric, because upon closer examination liberals hate diversity.

As evidence, just examine some recent and disturbing activities on the campus of Rutgers University. After former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice was invited to give the commencement address, liberals went crazy. In February, the faculty council passed a resolution demanding that the university withdraw their invitation to Rice. Thereafter, student protesters stormed the office of the Rutgers President to express their disapproval of the selection and condemn Rice as a war criminal.

What is ironic in this whole series of events is that Rice no conservative, but a very moderate Republican, who just happened to serve in the George W. Bush administration. Her academic and professional credentials are extraordinary and Rutgers students should have been extremely grateful to have someone of her caliber address them.

Unfortunately, only negative protests were heard from students and faculty, so Dr. Rice eventually decided to decline the invitation. In her letter to the university, Rice noted, "I have defended America's belief in free speech and the exchange of ideas. These values are essential to the health of our democracy."

Sadly, it seems that universities are no longer committed to free speech or open debate as only liberalism is allowed. This trend has been occurring across the nation for years. Whereas, universities are supposed to be laboratories for free discussion, embracing all ideological viewpoints; upon closer examination, liberalism is not only dominant, it is unchallenged.

On a regular basis, conservative speakers are either completely shunned or, if they are invited, verbally and even physically attacked on campus. Conservative commentator Ann Coulter, among many others, has been targeted. Today, even moderates like Dr. Rice are unwelcome.

Among the top universities in the nation, the commencement speaker list for 2014 is a Who's Who of liberalism. Delivering graduation addresses this year will be former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Harvard University, Secretary of State John Kerry at Yale University, former Vice President Al Gore at Princeton University, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at the University of California- Berkeley, MSNBC host Chris Matthews at Ohio State University, President Barack Obama at the University of California-Irvine and First Lady Michelle Obama at Dillard University in New Orleans.
