Social media chatter spikes on counting day

The elections of 2014 were fought with a lot of intensity on the social media too. In fact, the polls were touted as the countrys first social media elections. On counting day, especially, the social networking sites were agog with activity, with users voicing their opinions and updating results, minutes after news would break on television and also newspaper websites.

With Friday being a working day, office-goers had to depend on social media websites to share information about the winners and losers.

For most part of the day, I have been following Twitter for election news from my office. My colleagues and friends were also sharing news and pictures on the internet, said Saurabh Chatterjee, an IT employee at Gachibowli.

Election results trended on Facebook, Twitter and Google Hangout all through Friday, and so did the huge victory for the BJPs prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. In fact, #Results2014, #PMNaMo and #Elections2014 were some of the top trending hash tags on Twitter. The slogan Ab Ki Baaar, Modi Sarkaar also was tweeted and put up on the timelines by a large number of Facebook users.

The special news coverage by The Hindu on Twitter, on the handle #THresults, was trending on the social media websites. The Hindu Hyderabads Twitter account @HydConnect and #THresults witnessed a lot of traffic from social media users looking for instant breaking news.

Search giant Google, which had also featured a special doodle that of election ink painted on the index finger on its homepage, had put up live results as the votes were being counted.

Social media sites floored by Modi wave

Modi wave swept across social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook as BJP inched towards a thumping victory in the 16 Lok Sabha elections. Narendra Modi was the major trending topic on Twitter worldwide, who declared the victory of NDA by tweeting India has won! The tweet broke all records in India becoming the most retweeted tweet ever in the country.

In Visakhapatnam, BJPs Hari Babus landslide victory over YSRCPs Vijayamma led to a flood of tweets on Twitter. @vamsikaka tweeted: Massive respect to the people of #Vizag . You people are awesome. Our city is in safe hands now. #BJP #TDP.

Visakhapatnam had recorded a 70.57 per cent voter turnout in the General Elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assembly. @JitendraEmmani wrote: Thanks to my friends of Vizag. Our city will remain as the City of Destiny Great Job!

Interestingly, many tweets that poured in from different parts of the region were from the youth who remarked that this was, finally, a celebration of democracy and a successful completion of the largest election in history.

@SScharanalways tweets: At the right time...at the right moment...#Vizag people came to know the importance of their vote.

Vivek Rathod wrote on Facebook: There is no Modi Wave. It is actually Modi Tsunami!

@renachowraju tweeted: Vizag, take a bow! You voted silently but strongly...Finally we have a local MP....Way to go.

Summing up the mood and thoughts of the millions of voters of India, another tweet read: Whoever wins, (I) am hoping for a corruption free India, a stable economy, a safe country, less unemployment. I am happy (to be) 2b a part of #Raceto272.

And cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) tweeted: What is the thought on Chandrababu Naidu? Can he create a vibrant Seemandhra? Cheyyacha? The days to come will give a clear picture.
