Republicans probing Benghazi: Who they are

Republicans hoping to ride their Benghazi investigation to a November election sweep have entrusted a seven-member team with ``getting to the truth,'' in the words of House Speaker John Boehner, about whether the Obama administration misled Americans about the deadly attack in Libya.

They insist the investigation isn't political.

But several GOP members of the new House Select Committee on Benghazi have made claims about administration wrongdoing. Some have participated in previous investigations into how the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three other Americans were killed on Sept. 11, 2012, and how the administration responded.

Democrats have yet to say if they'll participate in what will be the eighth investigation since the attack on the U.S. diplomatic outpost in the eastern Libyan city.

Republicans say they need to find out why security was insufficient, what the president did the night of the attack, why the U.S. military didn't intervene, why initial explanations focused on a protest over a YouTube video and whether the administration deliberately sought to hide evidence about its conduct.

Some of the more contentious arguments made by the GOP members:

Chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-South Carolina

The second-term tea partyer and former prosecutor from South Carolina said two weeks ago there is evidence of a "cover-up.'" He cited a recently released email by White House national security communications aide Ben Rhodes.

He said the email "probably was the straw that broke the camel's back because that memo made it really clear we're going to blame an Internet video and not a broader policy failure in Libya." The White House has said Rhodes was referring to attacks across the Muslim world, not Benghazi specifically.

Gowdy has said former CIA Director Michael Morell "sanitized" a series of talking points used by then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice five days after the violence, substituting the term "extremist" for all references to "terrorist," and "demonstration" for ``attack.'' Republicans say this was part of an effort by President Barack Obama's team to play down a major terrorist attack in the final weeks of his re-election campaign.

Niger cabinet reshuffle shows insensitivity of PDP -APC

The All Progressives Congress in Niger State has described last weeks cabinet reshuffle by the state governor, Babangida Aliyu, as an outright display of insensitivity to the suffering of the people by the Peoples Democratic Party-led government.

APC in a statement issued on Sunday in Minna by its state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa, said the exercise as an action aimed at securing the political interest of the governor and not to serve the people.

According to him, the recent cabinet reshuffle was mere waste of government time and resources because it was mere recycling of the same old hands to serve the governors political ambition in 2015, it said.

Vatsa said it had become obvious that the PDP under Governor Aliyu in the state was tactically encouraging corruption and disorder.

When the PDP administration of Babangida Aliyu came on board, it promised not to work with thieves and corrupt officers of the preceding Kure administration in the state. But we see today that he has not only included the members of Kures administration in his government but has embarked on outright financial recklessness and insensitivity to the plight of the common man in the state, it said.

He said the people of the state were wallowing in poverty while civil servants remained grossly under paid

This deception must stop, we urge the good people of Niger State not to be deceived by the cosmetics of the government which beauty is in the rhetoric of government pronouncement with no practical achievements to show for it, it said.

APC wins all seats in Kano council polls

The All Progressives Congress has won all the chairmanship and councillorship seats in Saturdays council polls in Kano state.

This is contained in a statement signed by Chairman of Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, Dr. Sani Malumfashi, on Sunday in Kano.

The election has been largely successful and peaceful and APC won all the 44 local government chairmanship and the 484 councillorship posts in the state as officially declared by returning officers at the various levels, it disclosed.

The two-paragraph statement thanked the state government, politicians as well as residents for the support given KANSIEC before and during the election.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that 19 parties contested the election although only the APC and the Peoples Democraic Party contested all positions.

Meanwhile, the PDP in Kano State has rejected the outcome of the local government election.

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor and chieftain of PDP in the state announced the rejection on Sunday while addressing newsmen in Kano.

Shekarau said that the state electoral body failed to conduct a free and fair poll.

He said his party had evidence of electoral malpractices during the exercise.

He said that the PDP would go to the court to defend the principles of democracy as enshrined in the constitution.

Aborted Chibok trip: Jonathan betrayed Nigerians, says APC

The All Progressives Congress on Sunday said by failing to visit Chibok, Borno State, where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted by Boko Haram since April 14, President Goodluck Jonathan had betrayed Nigerians who voted him into office.

The party said the cancellation of the allegedly planned presidential visit to Chibok was indicative of the Jonathan administrations policy flip-flop in the fight against Boko Haram.

In a statement in Lagos, its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, APC said the Jonathan administration had bungled the fight against the sect and exhibited cluelessness in handling the abduction of the schoolgirls.

The party said, With his utterances and actions or inaction, President Jonathan has deepened the pains of the parents and guardians of the girls, and indeed that of the whole nation, when he should have been the consoler-in-chief at such a difficult time for a nation he leads.

A President and Commander-in-Chief, who is afraid to visit any part of his country, has betrayed the very people who voted him into office. In the case of Chibok, he has shown that the residents of the town should not expect to be seen as compatriots by their own President; hence they are on their own.

APC accused Jonathans administration of lying to Nigerians by saying the President never planned to visit Chibok, even when it was widely reported that the Presidents advance team had landed in Borno State.

The party described the Presidents explanation that he did not go to Chibok because the girls were not being held there as pedestrian.
