Ted Cruz: Senate Dems Are Trying to Repeal the First Amendment

Speaking at a Family Research Council pastors retreat yesterday, Senator Ted Cruz warned the audience that Senate Democrats want to repeal the first amendment with a new amendment placing more limits on campaign finance that Cruz said is meant to muzzle peoples ability to speak out against bad government practices.

He charged that the 41 Democrats co-sponsoring the amendment want to give Congress unlimited authority to regulate political speech, which means they have signed onto repealing the First Amendment.

And what Cruz found most troubling is how the amendment says it protects freedom of the press, but makes no similar statements about freedoms of speech and religious liberty. He warned that if the amendment passes, politicians will have the power to muzzle each and every one of you.

Defining Hillary Clinton for young voters

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Washington (CNN) -- In presidential politics, very little is random. And the recent questions about Hillary Clinton's age and health is anything but.

National Republicans, as well as anti-Clinton outside groups and right-wing blogs, have stepped up efforts to redefine Clinton, despite her nearly 40 years on the political stage.

At the heart of this effort is one group of voters: young people.

Republicans think that young voters -- particularly Americans who were in diapers or listening to N*SYNC during the eight years that Hillary Clinton lived in the White House -- could use a refresher course on all things Clinton. Republicans feel young people could use their version of Clinton's history - and might be impressionable over what might seem like distant history.

They have stepped up their message and research efforts to rehash the news of the '90s -- including the policies and scandals that defined the years from 1992 to 2000 -- as part of their wider campaign against her as she mulls another run for president.

Democrats charge that the Republican campaign is just "dredging up" old news. Republicans describe it as "citing" recent history.

Rove attack was clumsy but shrewd

"There is a whole swath of voters out there who obviously know of Hillary Clinton and understand who the Clintons are, but they don't know of her as the politician, they don't know the specifics about her time in the White House," Kirsten Kukowski, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, said.

Details about the Clinton White House years is not old news for people who were in "grade school" at the time, she said.

Hillary Clinton coming to Austin to speak on new book

AUSTIN As former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton faces new questions in Washington about the 2012 Benghazi consulate attack, she is coming to Texas' capital city on June 20 to discuss the "crises, choices and challenges" she faced while in office.

Officials said Thursday that Clinton, the wife of former President Bill Clinton, a former U.S. senator and possible contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, will speak at the downtown Long Center about her new book, "Hard Choices," due out June 10.

While some die-hard Clinton supporters are suggesting that the appearance could be a run-up to her expected presidential campaign, Clinton officials insist it is anything more than a book tour speech.

This week, a House committee was convened to investigate whether Clinton's State Department made miscues that cost lives when Islamic terrorists attacked the diplomatic mission in Libya, killing U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and diplomat Sean Smith, as Republicans have alleged.

The incident has sparked continuing controversy, and is expected to be an issue in a Clinton presidential race. GOP House leaders have complained that the State Department was not forthcoming with answers about the attack, and have pressed for months for full disclosure of information about what happened.

Discussion is ongoing about whether Clinton will appear at expected Washington hearings.

According to an announcement about the speech, Clinton will discuss "the crises, choices and challenges she faced during her four years" as secretary of state "and how these experiences drive her view of the future."
